The ZTE Blade S6 may be faster than the 3rd Gen Moto G, but when Motorola's handset is better made and has a superior camera and battery life, the money you save with the Blade S6 starts to feel like a false economy. There's also the Vodafone Smart Ultra 6 to consider, which is arguably better value than both handsets as long as you don't mind switching to Vodafone. The Blade S6 certainly hits hard in the budget smartphone arena, but it lacks the stamina to really go head-to-head with Android's cut-price heavyweights.

We like what the ZTE Blade S6 is about. It wants to get you something a bit snazzier and more powerful than an ‘upper-entry’ level model like the Motorola Moto G, while still staying significantly below £200. We’re just not all that sure about how ZTE has handled it. The custom UI feels a little unprofessional in parts, and some of the custom software loaded onto the ZTE Blade S6 is rubbish.

While the name could certainly do with some work — seriously ZTE, you’re not fooling anyone that this is an S6 — as could the style and design — again, you’re not fooling anyone that this isn’t an iPhone — ZTE’s take on what constitutes a mid-range phone for a less-than mid-range price is intriguing, and would certainly be compelling for someone keen for a new phone who has no qualms about trying a brand that isn’t totally recognisable.

It has been nice to use the ZTE Blade S6 over the last week as it has been refreshing to see such a new phone from a Chinese manufacturer coming straight to market. Beyond the initial launcher it is a clean(ish) Android Lollipop experience. Whilst it does have some shortcomings in a few areas, this is a good all-round device. If only it had a slightly better battery then it would not be that far off being a genuine Mid tier champion.

Obviously, given the interior excellence, compromises would have to be made to keep the ZTE competitively priced. You’ll find those compromises most evident within the design, screen and battery power the phone affords. But the phone truly excels in other areas. Especially thanks to an exceptional combination of software and hardware.

The Blade S6 is a decent mid-range handset, packing the major features that you’d expect such as 4G support. At around £170 it’s worthy competition for the Moto G, packing a similarly bright 5-inch 720p screen and a reasonably reliable 13-megapixel camera, although we’re not sold on ZTE’s Android tweaks and the plastic shell scuffs up rather easily.

ZTE has turned out a highly capable Android smartphone for a very reasonable price. In terms of power and photographic capabilities, it wipes the floor with the Motorola Moto G, which is only a little cheaper. However, ZTE could learn a thing or two about design from the current budget champ, as the Blade S6 simply doesn't look or feel very nice in the hand.

At a touch over £150 the ZTE Blade S6 is a great-value Android Lollipop phone with strong general performance and an attractive iPhone 6-like build. Dual-SIM and 4G LTE connectivity, a selection of smart gestures and a capable Sony camera all add to this phone's appeal, but its battery life is no better than average and we're not so keen on the idea of having all our apps by default laid bare on the home screen.

The ZTE Blade S6 is definitely an eye-catcher but the iPhone looks may be doing it more harm than favors at some markets. Apple is a natural target for replicas - there are blatant copycats and then there are phones like the Blade S6, which manage to retain an identity if their own. Still, brands like ZTE and Lenovo don't have to go there to get noticed.
