The net results of Toshiba's efforts are a computer designed for busy travelers but which neither looks particularly good nor works particularly well in day-to-day use because of its keyboard issues. Repackage it as a $500 executive netbook, and maybe we have a deal.

We're quite fond of the Toshiba Portege R700: it's very slim, incredibly light, has an internal optical drive and a capable battery for just under a grand. Sweet. If you're looking for an ultralight among 13" models, the R700 stands out for value and portability. Sure, it's not clad in metal like the 13" macBook Pro but it's much lighter and won't give you hot flashes when using it on your lap. In fact, it's as light as the MacBook Air, but more powerful. Toshiba offers enough CPU options to suit everyone from the budget conscious to the need for speed crowd, though even the top configuration can't come close to dethroning the speed king Sony Vaio Z.

While the battery life may not have lived up to the 8 hour claim, the Portege R705 as a whole is an impressive notebook that includes a durable body, light weight and thin body as well as enough power to satisfy most users at an equally impressive price point. For these reasons we are giving the Toshiba Portege R705 a Notebooks.com Editor’s Choice award in the ultra-portable category.

The Toshiba Portégé R705-P25 is basically your poor man's Sony VAIO VPC-Z116GXS. Together, they're the lightest duo with 13-inch screens and built-in optical drives, except one costs half as much as the other. The R705-P25 is a beautifully-made ultraportable and ideal for those who have busy travelling schedules, but are reluctant to sacrifice all the amenities of a full size laptop. I would still recommend the Asus U30Jc-1A in this price range, though. It has more graphics power and ships with a bigger battery, even if it is almost two pounds heavier.

Toshiba’s Portege R705 is an unexpected addition to the company’s ultraportable range. Based on the Portege R700 unveiled as part of Toshiba’s 25th anniversary for notebooks, the R705-P25 is a Best Buy exclusive with an MRSP of $889.99 but a street price that scrapes in at under $800. That makes it the cheapest Portege to date, and Toshiba would like us to remember it’s also the lightest 13.3-inch notebook with an integrated optical drive (outside of Japan, at least).

We know that the quest for the perfect laptop is ultimately fruitless. Different users have different needs, budgets, and expectations, and tomorrow's technology threatens to make any just-purchased laptop semi-obsolete before it even comes out of its cardboard box. Toshiba's Portege R series has always impressed, and the new 13-inch Portege R705 is close to a perfect balance of design, price, and performance.

Flat out, consumers haven't been able to get such a feature-packed ultraportable at such an affordable price until now, and the cheaper price tag doesn't result in a shoddy build as we expected it might. If you're looking for a thin and light 13-inch laptop under $900, the R705 beats all the others on the market – and that's not something we say often. Hey, Toshiba, how do you feel about celebrating every birthday this way?
