More than that, we can't help but look at the better Core i3 and Blu-ray deals to be had. For instance, the $800 Gateway NV79C35u has the same Core i3 processor and Blu-ray drive as the EC, though it doesn't have discrete graphics.

Performance is good even with the Core i3 processor and the media features including the Blu-ray compatible drive are a nice addition. The downside to this media focuses laptop is the price. While priced under $1000, there are similarly equipped laptops from the likes of Gateway and Toshiba that can be found for even less.

EN→IT Archive.org versionAfter spending several weeks with the VAIO EC my overall opinion is that this is a good notebook for a reasonable price. Our review unit is one of the older configurations that is still available in retail outlets (including many SonyStyle brick-and-mortar stores found in shopping malls), but newer configurations offer better processors for a starting price of $750. It's a shame we couldn't test one of those newer configurations, because the slower Pentium-class processor and slower hard drive in our test system proved to be less than impressive. On the bright side, the AMD ATI dedicated graphics give this desktop replacement notebook all the power it needs to handle multimedia applications and some modern games. The build quality feels a little weak in spots, but the Sony VAIO EC makes a fine multimedia notebook if you're on a budget ... and it's even more impressive if you buy the newer configurations.

There's no denying that the keyboard is top-notch, and there's enough muscle here for both productivity chores and mainstream games. However, there are better deals out there. A Dell Inspiron 17R with similar specs (Core i3 CPU, ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5740 graphics, 4GB of RAM, and a 500GB hard drive) can be had for $50 less, as can a Toshiba L670 with a more powerful Core i5 processor, integrated graphics, 4GB of RAM, and a 500GB hard drive. We wish the screen had better viewing angles and that the speakers were more powerful, but overall the VAIO EC is an attractive notebook that provides solid performance for the price.

Sony: Sony Corporation è una delle più grandi aziende di elettronica giapponesi. L'azienda è stata fondata nel 1946 con un nome diverso e inizialmente produceva cuociriso. L'azienda ha lanciato la prima radio a transistor. Nel 1958, la società fu ribattezzata Sony. Sony è una combinazione della parola latina sonus (suono) e della parola inglese sonny (ragazzino). Oggi il suo core business è l'elettronica di consumo. L'azienda è impegnata nello sviluppo, progettazione, produzione e vendita di apparecchiature elettroniche, strumenti, dispositivi, console di gioco e software. Sony opera nei seguenti segmenti: giochi e servizi di rete, musica, immagini, home entertainment e audio, prodotti e soluzioni di imaging, comunicazioni mobili, semiconduttori, servizi finanziari e altri.
La maggior parte dei giochi attuali può essere giocata in modo fluido. Ma preparatevi ad una riduzione delle presentazioni grafiche considerando le impostazioni di dettaglio basse e la risoluzione limitata. Tuttavia, queste schede forniscono ancora abbastanza potenza per le applicazioni da ufficio e la proiezioni di video (ma non per i video HD).
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650: Scheda grafica di media classe per DirectX 11 con un consumo di energia in media di 15-20 Watt. Supporta Eyevision (fino a 6 monitors)
Soltanto i giochi datasi possono essere giocati in modo fluido con questi chips grafici (se non richiedono troppe prestazioni). I cores con memoria grafica condivisa in questa categoria hanno il vantaggio delle minori emissioni di calore e della maggiore autonomia della batteria. Per ufficio, internet, image processing, e video editing queste schede grafiche sono utilizzabili senza particolari problematiche.
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5470:
Chip DirectX 11 entry level con supporto GDDR5 ma solo 80 shader core. Supporta Eyefinity (fino a 4 monitor) e 8-ch HD audio su HDMI. Prestazioni alla pari con la vecchia GeForce 8600M GT.

Intel Core i5:
520M: Il Core i5-520M ha solo 3 MB di L3 Cache (rispetto alla I7-640M) ed un clock tra 2.4-2.93 GHz (Turbo Mode). Grazie all'Hyperthreading, possono essere processati 4 threads contemporaneamente. Nel pacchetto è inclusa anche una scheda grafica (GMA HD 3150) ed un controller memoria DDR3.
430M: Il Core i5-430M è una CPU dual core di media classe che sfrutta solo 3 MB di L3 Cache (rispetto alla I7-640M) ed ha un clock tra 2.26-2.53 GHz (Turbo Mode). Inoltre, nella 430M mancano VT-d, trusted Execution e funzioni AES. Grazie all'Hyperthreading, possono essere gestiti 4 threads contemporaneamente. Nel pacchetto sono incluse anche una scheda grafica integrata (Intel HD Graphics da 500-733 MHz) ed un controller memoria DDR3.
520UM: Il Core i5-520UM è un processore energeticamente efficiente a voltaggio ultra low per portatili. Utilizzando il Turbo Boost può arrivare fino a 1.86 GHz. razie all'Hyperthreading, 4 threads possono essere processati contemporaneamente. Nel pacchetto sono inclusi una scheda grafica integrata (Intel HD Graphics da 166-500 MHz) ed un controller di memoria DDR3-800. Rispetto al Core i7-620UM, la 520UM offre meno Level 3 Cache ed un Turbo Boost con un clock rate più lento.
460M: L'Intel Core i5-460M è una CPU dual core di fascia alta per portatili ed ha un clock (grazie al Turbo Mode) da 2.53 a 2.8 GHz. Ogni core si basa sulla micro architettura Nehalem (Westemere). L'hyperthreading consente alla CPU Dual Core di gestire 4 threads contemporaneamente (per un miglior utilizzo della pipeline).
Intel Core i3:
330M: La Core i3-330M è una 350M con un clock inferiore e di conseguenza manca della feature Turbo Boost ed ha un clock con un massimo di 2.13 GHz. Grazie all'Hyperthreading, possono essere processati 4 threads contemporaneamente. Nel pacchetto sono inclusi anche una scheda grafica integrata (GMA HD 3150) ed un controller di memoria DDR3.
Intel Pentium:
P6100: L'Pentium P6100 è una CPU di fascia bassa basata sul core Arrandale. Rispetto al Celeron P4600, il P6100 offre prestazioni leggermente migliori grazie al System Bus più veloce ed all'incremento di Level 3 cache. Tuttavia, non sono disponibili VT-x per il P6100.

Normalmente i portatili con diagonale da 17” pesano di più. Il peso è un po' eccessivo per un portatile da 15” ma accettabile per dispositivi destinati ad un utilizzo stazionario.
