Does Lenovo's business machine do the job for the average user? If you're in the market for a corporate laptop, at this price few are better than the ThinkPad SL500. The Toshiba Satellite Pro A300-2C5 may offer better multimedia performance, but the keyboard on this laptop is one of the best available, creating an excellent work environment.

We're usually big fans of Lenovo's no-nonsense approach to producing laptops. Its thin and light ThinkPad X300 is still one of our favourite ultraportables, some 16 month after its initial release and, last month, its business workstation - the T500 - also impressed us. This month, things have taken a different tack entirely, from the seriously expensive T-series to the ultra-cheap IdeaPad S10e and this - another reasonably-priced laptop, the SL500, which at ?434 exc VAT is less than half the price of the T500. Initially at least there's no discernible drop in quality, either. Lenovo cuts the price, but not the quality of its ThinkPad laptops and the result is a simply stunning budget machine.

The Lenovo ThinkPad SL500 manages to deliver both in terms of aim, as well as price. For the asking price, the build quality is excellent and the all-round usability makes it a pleasure to use. Sure, it's not the most powerful notebook around but the keyboard and battery life more than make up for it.

Most users won’t notice any differences between SL and pricier series of ThinkPad notebooks which is proof that Lenovo has done its homework very well. We encountered few problems with our sample (trackpoint and fan control) but we believe that those will be solved in one of next updates. With these problems solved, Lenovo ThinkPad SL300 will become very attractive model, although even with these problems it deserves our recommendation especially if you seek a model of notebook with long autonomy.

Day to day, I had very few complaints about the ThinkPad SL300. Lenovo may have dropped the cost of the product and moved it to a size that is new to the ThinkPads (aside from the X300/X301) but the fundamentals are still strong. As noted in the SL400 review, the SL series makes changes from the ThinkPad design that so many people know and love, but it is far from the disaster that many people forecasted. You get the quality and performance you want, but ditch some of the high-end features that you don’t necessarily need.

Lenovo does a great job of balancing features, performance and price with the ThinkPad SL300. It gives a true alterntive to those looking for a fully functional business class ultraportable laptop without the extremely high price tag of their ThinkPad X series. Lenovo: Lenovo ("Le" dalla leggenda inglese, novo (latino) per nuovo) è stata fondata nel 1984 come società cinese di commercio di computer. Nel 2004, l'azienda era il più grande produttore di laptop in Cina e, dopo aver acquisito la divisione PC di IBM nel 2005, il quarto più grande al mondo. Oltre a desktop e notebook, l'azienda produce monitor, proiettori, server, ecc. ed è specializzata nello sviluppo, produzione e commercializzazione di elettronica di consumo, personal computer, software, soluzioni aziendali e servizi correlati.

Nel 2016, l'azienda si è classificata al primo posto al mondo nelle vendite di computer. Lo deteneva ancora nel 2023 con una quota di mercato globale di circa il 23%. Importanti linee di prodotti sono Thinkpad, Legion e Ideapad.

Nel 2011 ha acquisito una partecipazione di maggioranza in Medion AG, un produttore europeo di hardware per computer. Nel 2014 è stata acquistata Motorola Mobility, che ha dato a Lenovo una spinta nel mercato degli smartphone.

Soltanto i giochi datasi possono essere giocati in modo fluido con questi chips grafici (se non richiedono troppe prestazioni). I cores con memoria grafica condivisa in questa categoria hanno il vantaggio delle minori emissioni di calore e della maggiore autonomia della batteria. Per ufficio, internet, image processing, e video editing queste schede grafiche sono utilizzabili senza particolari problematiche.

NVIDIA GeForce 9300M GS: Confrontata con la 9300M G, la GS ha solo 8 unified shaders con un clock più alto. Perciò le performance, secondo Nvidia, sono simili. Supporta Hybrid-SLI (GeForceBoost e HybridPower) con Nvidia 9100M G e PureVideo HD (VP3).

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 4500MHD: Scheda grafica intregrata basata sul chipset GM45 (Montevina). Più performante rispetto alla vecchia GMA X3100 grazie ha due shader in più ed ad un clock più elevato. Rimane, comunque, non consigliata per i giocatori più incalliti. Il processore video integrato è capace di codificare video HD (AVC/VC-2/MPEG2). Ad esempio permette la riproduzione di video HD compatibile con i requisiti del logo Blu-Ray, con il supporto nativo per unità Blu-Ray.

Intel Core 2 Duo: Questo è il successore del Core Duo e del Core Solo con una pipeline più lunga ed il 5-20% di velocità in più senza avere maggiore consumo di energia. Come aggiunta al design del Core Duo esiste un quarto decoder, una unità amplificata SSE ed una unità logica aritmetica (ALU) addizionale. Il Core 2 Duo per portatili è identico al processore per desktop Core 2 Duo ma il processore per portatili lavora con un voltaggio inferiore (0.95 a 1188 Volt) ed un Frontside bus clock inferiore (1066 vs 667 MHz). Le prestazioni di portatili con clock equivalenti sono inferiori del 20-25% rispetto ai PCs Desktop a causa del Frontside bus clock inferiore e agli hard disks più lenti.

P8400: CPU dual core di classe media con un TDP di 25 Watt. Per i giocatori molto esigenti le prestazioni potrebbero non essere sufficienti (per schede grafiche di prima classe).

P8600: CPU dual core veloce ma non costosa. Sufficiente per la maggior parte dei giochi e delle applicazioni multimedia ed adatta anche ai portatili più piccoli grazie ai 25W di TDP.
