Lenovo ThinkPad P14s Gen 4 review – portable and loaded with power and security features

The Lenovo ThinkPad P14s Gen 4 is a balanced device. It’s not a 3 kg powerhouse but its performance is very good given the low weight and the thin profile. Yes, portability is one of the biggest advantages of this machine. At the same time, the P-series CPU can sustain a 32W power limit and decent P and E core clocks under heavy stress. In short and medium loads, these frequencies are higher which results in fast responsiveness for everyday tasks. The comfort during load is good, the single fan isn’t too loud when the CPU is at max load. If not, the notebook is definitely quieter. The base isn’t scorching hot even during gaming – it just feels warm to the touch. Sure, this is a workstation, but the optional dedicated NVIDIA RTX A500 (Laptop, 30W) is fast enough for playing new games on Medium or maybe High settings. The input devices are pleasant.

The ThinkPad P14s Gen 4 is a great laptop for getting work done. It comes well-equipped for productivity with a display that’s exceptionally easy to see in a wide variety of conditions, both dark and bright. The hardware inside zips along, easily handling everyday computing tasks and even muscling through some heavier lifts. Using the computer is all the more enjoyable thanks to an excellent keyboard that regular typists will love. Being a work machine, there’s a little to be desired design-wise. While recent consumer machines have gotten a glow-up, the ThinkPad P14s Gen 4 still looks fairly utilitarian, is kind of thick, and has chunky bezels around the display (at least the top bezel gives you an IR webcam).

I’ve been using the Lenovo ThinkPad P14s Gen 4 as my main laptop for the past few weeks and I’ve really enjoyed it. One of the biggest things I was worried about was how heavy it was going to be compared to my thin and light laptop that is usually my daily driver. Being just under 3lbs it didn’t really add much extra weight or bulk to my backpack and the 100W power adapter is quite small. The best part of using a laptop like this over something like a more mainstream laptop is the added power you get. First you have the Intel Core i7-1370P vPro processor which handled everything I threw at it from normal every day things like web browsing to more intensive tasks like video editing. On top of that you do get dedicated graphics from NVIDIA’s RTX A500 laptop GPU. Having dedicated graphics takes the load off of your CPU for more GPU-intensive tasks and will speed up things like encoding or rendering.

Lenovo: Lenovo ("Le" dalla leggenda inglese, novo (latino) per nuovo) è stata fondata nel 1984 come società cinese di commercio di computer. Nel 2004, l'azienda era il più grande produttore di laptop in Cina e, dopo aver acquisito la divisione PC di IBM nel 2005, il quarto più grande al mondo. Oltre a desktop e notebook, l'azienda produce monitor, proiettori, server, ecc. ed è specializzata nello sviluppo, produzione e commercializzazione di elettronica di consumo, personal computer, software, soluzioni aziendali e servizi correlati.

Nel 2016, l'azienda si è classificata al primo posto al mondo nelle vendite di computer. Lo deteneva ancora nel 2023 con una quota di mercato globale di circa il 23%. Importanti linee di prodotti sono Thinkpad, Legion e Ideapad.

Nel 2011 ha acquisito una partecipazione di maggioranza in Medion AG, un produttore europeo di hardware per computer. Nel 2014 è stata acquistata Motorola Mobility, che ha dato a Lenovo una spinta nel mercato degli smartphone.

Queste schede grafiche dovrebbero essere in grado di far funzionare tutti i giochi attuali con un framerates fluido ma rinunciando al livello di dettaglio massimo. Specialmente i giochi impegnativi come Crysis, Age of Conan, o Mass Effect sono utilizzabili soltanto con impostazioni grafiche ridotte. I giochi meno pesanti (e più datati), come Fifa 08, Command & Conquer 3, o Battlefield 2142 possono essere giocati con livello di dettagli più alto.

NVIDIA RTX A500 Laptop GPU:

Scheda grafica professionale di fascia media per laptop basata sul chip Ampere GA106 con 2.048 core CUDA. Più lenta della GeForce GTX 3050 consumer con driver certificati. Disponibile in diverse varianti di prestazioni che vanno da 20 a 60 W TGP (consumo energetico massimo).

Ridurre la distanza delle Schede Grafiche per gli utenti che vogliono utilizzare il videogiochi. I nuovi giochi dovrebbero funzionare su queste schede, ma con riduzione dei dettagli e risoluzione mediocre.

AMD Radeon 780M:

Scheda grafica integrata nelle APU della serie mobile Ryzen 7040 basata sull'architettura RDNA3 con 12 CUs (= 768 shaders) ed una velocità clock fino a 3 GHz.

Intel Raptor Lake-P:

i5-1340P: CPU basata su Raptor Lake-P con un TDP di 28 Watt. Offre 4 core di prestazioni e 8 core di efficienza e quindi 16 thread.

i7-1370P: La CPU Alder Lake-P di fascia alta è caratterizzata da 6 core ad alte prestazioni e 8 core efficienti. Questo i7 è progettato per l'uso in computer portatili ultraleggeri; i suoi core ad alte prestazioni sono dotati della tecnologia Hyper-Threading che raddoppia i thread, per un totale di ben 20 thread. La CPU funziona fino a 5,2 GHz e dispone del set di funzionalità vPro di livello "Enterprise". Il Core i7-1370P ha una potenza di base di 28 W e l'iGPU Iris Xe da 96 EU.

AMD Phoenix (Zen 4, Ryzen 7040):

R7 PRO 7840U: Processore mobile di fascia alta a 8 core, basato sull'architettura Zen 4. I core della CPU hanno un clock fino a 5,1 GHz ed eseguono 16 thread contemporaneamente. Integra un XDNA Ai-Engine. Il TDP è configurabile tra 35 e 54 Watt. Rispetto al Ryzen 7 7840U consumer, i modelli PRO offrono ulteriori caratteristiche di sicurezza, gestibilità e affidabilità, pensate per gli utenti professionali e gli ambienti di lavoro.
