Huawei ha dotato il notebook multimediale MateBook 16 di un processore Intel e lo ha chiamato MateBook 16s. Gli acquirenti ottengono anche una porta Thunderbolt 4, un modulo Wi-Fi 6E all'avanguardia e un po' più di corsa dei tasti. A parte questo, non c'è molta differenza. Questo giustifica un aumento di prezzo di 500 euro (510 dollari)?
Huawei ha dotato il notebook multimediale MateBook 16 di un processore Intel e lo ha chiamato MateBook 16s. Gli acquirenti ottengono anche una porta Thunderbolt 4, un modulo Wi-Fi 6E all'avanguardia e un po' più di corsa dei tasti. A parte questo, non c'è molta differenza. Tirando le somme questo MateBook 16s è un prodotto sicuramente interessante ma che potrebbe soffrire la presenza di MateBook 16 che è presente sul mercato con un prezzo decisamente inferiore. Il nuovo modello, nella versione provata da noi, è infatti disponibile ad un prezzo di listino di 1699 euro. Non sono pochi, è vero, specialmente se paragonati ai circa 1000 euro necessari per acquistare oggigiorno MateBook 16. Le differenze però ci sono e con questo nuovo modello Huawei è andata sostanzialmente a sistemare tutti quei particolari che ci hanno fatto muovere critiche in relazione al modello AMD. La webcam, ad esempio, raddoppia la risoluzione ed è al posto giusto; ma anche il display 3:2 che aggiunge il touchscreen, o la nuova tastiera con una corsa dei tasti aumentata che ne aumenta la precisione. Come già anticipato a livello di potenza di calcolo le differenze sono minime, eccezion fatta per la GPU, dove l'ago della bilancia pende a favore di 16s. Insomma, 600 euro di differenza sono tanti ma tenete d'occhio le offerte;

Le differenze però ci sono e con questo nuovo modello Huawei è andata sostanzialmente a sistemare tutti quei particolari che ci hanno fatto muovere critiche in relazione al modello AMD. La webcam, ad esempio, raddoppia la risoluzione ed è al posto giusto; ma anche il display 3:2 che aggiunge il touchscreen, o la nuova tastiera con una corsa dei tasti aumentata che ne aumenta la precisione. Il nuovo MateBook 16s convince a tutto tondo grazie alla sua estrema portabilità, a un ampio display che spinge molto sulla produttività e ad una batteria granitica. Ottima la tastiera, così come la presenza del touchscreen, che rendono questo prodotto davvero completo per il lavoro, lo studio e l'intrattenimento. Il sistema di raffreddamento è preciso e discreto anche sotto sforzo, riuscendo a garantire al contempo la stabilità del sistema anche negli scenari più impegnativi. Il processore Intel Core i7-12700H si è rivelato una garanzia per prestazioni generali e multitasking più o meno spinto, mentre l'esperienza multimediale risulta di altissimo livello grazie a una resa cromatica eccellente, una discreta luminosità anche all'aperto e un sonoro avvolgente. I really enjoy the large screen, as it allows me to have multiple tabs open at once to work, and it performs great when I want to binge Netflix and YouTube after work. The 12th-Gen Intel H-Series processor is also ridiculously fast for a laptop in this price range, proving itself in the speedy load-up times and ability to run multiple software and apps at once without faltering. This does come at the price of the battery, which isn’t the best I’ve seen, but can be solved as long as you’re near to a plug socket. In my opinion, this is the best 16-inch laptop you can get from Huawei right now, and I would implore anyone interested in a large-screened machine to give this one a chance.

It’s well-built, has a colourful display, and can be equipped with the kind of power that would embarrass many desktop PCs. At £1499 for an M1 MacBook-baiting Core i9 model, it also looks like stonkingly good value for anyone that can take advantage of all that CPU muscle. In real-world use though, the chip is rarely able to fully flex its muscles. Anyone in need of so much power will probably also want a dedicated GPU, which isn’t an option here. That makes the i7 version our laptop of choice – it’s still mighty quick, and matches the i9 version everywhere else. Creatives that need more than Photoshop might be underwhelmed, but the Matebook 16S absolutely earns a place on the shortlist for other workers that aren’t chained to an office desk.

Despite only spending a short time with the Huawei MateBook 16s, I thought it was a solid laptop and ideal choice for anyone looking to engage in entry-level creative work on a large screen. The large 16-inch screen looked bright and vibrant, making it ideal for photo editing, multitasking ands even Netflix binigng sessions. I do think the starting price of £1299.99 is a little steep given the lack of a discrete GPU, but the 12th-Gen H-Series Intel processor and Intel Evo certification should make it a speedy device that I would expect can breeze though productivity tasks. While I wouldn’t recommend it to any professional or gamer seeing a high-end graphics performance, I think it will work well for anyone after a large portable device with generous screen space.

The lack of a dedicated GPU option will undeniably limit the appeal to serious video editors or anyone hoping to use this to game, but don’t write off the integrated Iris Xe graphics, which provide plenty of oomph for office work and even photo editing and graphic design. If you want a 4K OLED panel or an Nvidia RTX GPU then the MateBook 16s won’t be for you – but then nothing at this price point will be. But with plenty of power in a relatively compact chassis, and all at a competitive price...
