CMF Phone 2 Pro ci ha convinti quasi sotto ogni aspetto, posizionandosi come nuovo punto di riferimento tra gli smartphone economici. Nothing è riuscita nell’intento di portare l’esperienza “premium” della sua filosofia (cura del design, software pulito, attenzione ai dettagli) in un telefono dal prezzo accessibile, senza sacrificare i fondamentali. Dopo averlo “provato” possiamo dire che questo dispositivo “non sembra costare solo 259€”: dall’ottimo display OLED 120Hz, alle prestazioni fluide del sistema, fino alla versatilità delle fotocamere, tutto trasmette una qualità superiore alla media della fascia. Naturalmente qualche compromesso c’è stato – è pur sempre un medio-gamma – ma nulla che intacchi l’esperienza d’uso generale: forse reputiamo una pecca da non sottovalutare l’assenza degli speaker stereofonici, oppure anche del supporto e-sim, ma nulla che impedisca di esprimere un giudizio altamente positivo nell’ottica del prezzo.

CMF Phone 2 Pro è una piccola anomalia nel panorama degli smartphone di fascia medio-bassa. Offre un design davvero originale, uno schermo che non ha nulla da invidiare a device molto più costosi, prestazioni solide e una batteria duratura, il tutto accompagnato da un software che fa la differenza. Non è perfetto: l’audio ha poca profondità, la fotocamera grandangolare è da migliorare, manca la ricarica wireless e la resistenza all’acqua è solo parziale. Ma il compromesso generale è ben bilanciato. Per chi cerca un telefono funzionale, bello da vedere e con qualche idea originale a bordo, è una proposta da considerare. In una prima versione della nostra recensione, abbiamo scritto che a bordo di questo smartphone manca il trasmettitore NFC: ci scusiamo per l’imprecisione, che però è parzialmente aderente alla realtà. Almeno in questo momento, nel momento in cui scriviamo la recensione, Google wallet impedisce di autenticare e registrare le carte di credito, per un problema di attendibilità del software.

Questo CMF Phone 2 Pro è ancora una volta un super smartphone economico che offre più di quello che gli altri offrono nella stessa fascia di prezzo. Abbiamo resistenza agli spruzzi, una back cover facilmente sostituibile, uno schermo luminoso (e con bordi simmetrici), ma soprattutto un software pulito e aggiornato a lungo. In più quest'anno c'è finalmente l'NFC e l'essere Pro ha fatto moltiplicare il numero di fotocamere (non tutte ottime però). Scontato per qualche evento diventerà di nuovo quasi l'unico smartphone da consigliare fascia attorno ai 200€.

La nuova generazione di smartphone CMF offre decisamente di più della prima, sia in termini di funzionalità che di attenzioni ai dettagli. E ha un prezzo di solo 259 euro per la versione 8+128GB e 289 euro per quella da 8+256GB— che tenendo conto del prezzo da 239 euro di CMF Phone 1 nella versione 8+128GB e 269 euro in quella da 8+256GB, significa che l’appellativo “Pro” costa solo venti euro in più. Il prezzo ben ragionato soprattutto tenendo conto che Nothing Phone 3a parte da 349 euro (anche se online lo trovate a qualche decina di euro meno): questo permette di salire molto facilmente nella fascia media, per chi vuole fotocamere migliori e un design ancor più originale. Da segnalare anche la disponibilità di accessori che partono da 25 euro per l’Universal cover a 35 euro per ottiche fisheye e macro oppure Wallet/Stan in tessuto, disponibili anche in bundle a 45 euro.

Buona la seconda insomma: così come stupì il CMF Phone 1 lo scorso anno, altrettanto è riuscito nell’intento questo CMF Phone 2 Pro. In un mercato di smartphone tutti molto simili, Nothing riesce quasi sempre a confezionare le caratteristiche tecniche fondamentali per far funzionare bene lo smartphone a tutto tondo, aggiungerci quel tocco che basta di unicità e offrire il tutto ad un prezzo accattivante. CMF Phone 2 Pro ha infatti tutto ciò che serve sulla fascia dei 200-300 euro: un processore reattivo e che consuma il giusto, un display di qualità, un design unico, un software particolare con le stesse funzionalità AI presenti sugli smartphone più costosi, un comparto fotografico versatile con tanto di preset fotografici ma non solo, a questo aggiunge l’espansione di memoria, l’NFC per i pagamenti digitali (che mancava sul CMF Phone 1) e qualche dettaglio non scontato come il PWM Dimming ad alta frequenza.

CMF Phone 2 Pro è quindi un fantastico acquisto? Sì! Lo consiglierei a molti? Assolutamente sì, quasi a tutti! Per alcune persone infatti potrebbe essere preferibile un Motorola come l'Edge 50 Neo che ha l'eSIM, un sistema di altoparlanti stereo e con Dolby Atmos al supporto, un display LTPO, una ricarica più rapida e addirittura anche wireless. Spesso l'Edge 50 Neo è acquistabile per 270/290€ anche nel taglio 12/512GB. Il CMF Phone 2 Pro invece arriva a 259€ ma nel taglio 8/128GB mentre ipotizzo che saliremo a 299€ per quello 8/256GB. Prezzo valido, concorrenziale ma che non lo rende comunque un prodotto unico. Certo che parliamo del prezzo di listino. Il Motorola citato poco sopra, sempre al listino, costava praticamente il doppio.

The phone is only available through Nothing's Beta program in the US, and you might encounter compatibility issues depending on your carrier. T-Mobile, my carrier of choice, offers the best connectivity for 3G, 4G, and most 5G. AT&T lacks 5G, VoLTE, and VoWiFi support, while Verizon is even more unreliable. LTE may work if your IMEI is whitelisted, but CDMA and 5G are not supported there. The CMF Phone 2 Pro is a solid low-midrange smartphone that offers excellent value for its cost. The device isn't perfect, but its downsides are all pretty reasonable tradeoffs. As you could probably already tell, we like the CMF Phone 2 Pro quite a bit. It's great value for the money and it is nice that you get double the storage at a lower price than the competition. CMF's most important added value is the clean and well-optimized user interface, and coupled with adequate hardware this results in a phone that runs quite a bit smoother than others and is a joy to use. We are not fully sold on the modularity idea and the screw-on lenses, as those seem more of a marketing gimmick rather than adding real value. However, we do appreciate the quirky design and our only real complaint would be the sub-par audio quality. If you can deal with that, the CMF Phone 2 Pro might just be the budget phone of 2025.

The Nothing CMF Phone 2 Pro would be an excellent deal at a much higher price, but at $279, it’s an absolute steal. That’s not to say that you should buy it over an actual flagship phone if you have the budget for one. But if you’re looking for a phone at around $300 or so, this is easily the one to buy. It has an interesting design, an excellent camera, and good performance, not only for a phone in this price range but for one at twice its price point. If you’re interested in the device and live in the US, you’ll have to join Nothing’s so-called beta program, which includes agreeing to potentially not getting full support for your carrier. Not only that, but modular accessories aren’t available in the US, which is a little disappointing. If you’re happy to deal with those caveats, you can check the phone out at the Nothing website.

The CMF Phone 2 Pro once again highlights Nothing's ability to deliver outstanding budget phones. The phone has a fully sealed back this time, and as such, the back cover isn't detachable; that said, there's a new universal case that allows the use of accessories, and it is a good workaround. There are plenty of upgrades; you get a trio of cameras at the back, a flexible AMOLED with ultra-thin bezels, great battery life, and clean software with a unique design and customizability. If you need a budget phone in 2025, there really isn't anything else that gives you as good a value. Nothing is making a habit of showing up other budget phones, and the CMF Phone 2 Pro is my go-to recommendation if you need a new sub-$300 phone in 2025.

A year ago I said the CMF Phone 1 “nailed the basics of a budget phone”. Its successor goes even better than that, adding features that were missing before and improving on others. The camera situation has taken a welcome step forward, and the design is a little more mature, too. Or as much as anything this bright and orange can mature, anyway. Performance and battery life have only seen incremental changes, and there are a few more keenly-priced rivals in the mix than there were for the original CMF Phone, but Nothing’s commitment to modularity and a wonderfully customisable Android interface help make this my top pick for the cash. Even the Essential space is becoming that bit more essential than it was on its debut. Unless you’re willing to spend twice as much on better low-light photography and gaming oomph, there’s very little not to like here.

I won’t mince words here: if you live outside the United States and want an Android phone that costs less than $300, this is now the only thing I would recommend. You’ll get a fantastic display, a forward-thinking, beautiful design, and a camera system that literally has no equal at this price point. Frankly, you’d be throwing money away if you were to buy anything else. Here in the United States, though, I can’t be so confident. The lack of adequate band support brings the phone down significantly, and the lack of access to its unique accessories drags it down even more. Even when you factor in its camera system and low price, it might be better to get something else instead. If you do live in the US and are looking for something good at around this price, I’d start with the Samsung Galaxy A25 5G ($299.99 at Amazon).

If you’re on board with the (admittedly divisive) styling – both physically and for software – and you’re looking for a phone in this price range, this is a wonderfully complete package. Of course, it won’t be the perfect fit for everyone, and the right phone for you all depends on your priorities. If you’re a gamer and you can stretch the budget slightly, the powerful Poco F6 can currently be had for just £249, now it’s a year old.
