I portatili hanno poco spazio per raffreddare adeguatamente l'hardware potente. Asus probabilmente si è chiesta: "perché non apriamo semplicemente il case e lasciamo che l'hardware riceva una fornitura diretta di aria fresca?" Detto e fatto, ma funziona davvero? Offre i vantaggi promessi in termini di rumore e temperatura, ed è abbastanza stabile allo stesso tempo? Lo abbiamo messo alla prova.

Nel complesso Asus ha svolto un ottimo lavoro con un nuovo ROG Zephyrus S17, che mira a primeggiare nel settore. Non è facile progettare un dispositivo con tali premesse e il lavoro svolto, al netto di alcune piccole zone d’ombra, risulta estremamente valido e soddisfacente in tutti gli ambiti d’utilizzo. Nota dolente per molti ma che concettualmente lo pone in una categoria a sé stante è il prezzo, superiore ai 3000 euro. Il peso e le dimensioni sono molto contenuti, la tastiera con switch ottici meccanici regala piacevoli digitazioni e le prestazioni non cedono il fianco a qualsivoglia compromesso. Un degno erede del modello precedente, che in questa nuova veste strizza l’occhio anche al pubblico professionale grazie all’implementazione di una webcam per videoconferenze e del lettore per microSD.

Con ROG Zephyrus S17 ASUS non ha badato a spese, in ogni senso. Non c'è un aspetto di questo notebook che non sia stato portato all'estremo, e sotto il profilo hardware è un autentico concentrato di quanto abbia di meglio da offrire il mercato. Il tutto sapientemente messo insieme da ASUS, che ha realizzato un sistema di raffreddamento in grado di contenere l'energivoro i9-11900H, che si conferma sì davvero in grado di tenere testa ed in buona parte superare i rivali di AMD, ma che richiede molta potenza per farlo (ed infatti qualche piccolo compromesso dovrete accettarlo). E poi abbiamo una tastiera rialzata, ottico-meccanica, con tanto di rotellina programmabile, un SSD così veloce che non riuscirete mai a sfruttarlo a pieno, ed un audio di alta qualità. Nulla è stato lasciato al caso insomma, per dare all'acquirente un'esperienza davvero premium. Basta che non ci chiediate il prezzo.

Siamo quindi al momento di tirare le somme e non possiamo certo evitare di parlare di prezzo che è un'altra delle poche, anzi pochissime, note negative. Questo Zephyrus S17 sarà infatti disponibile in Italia a partire da 3169 euro. Parliamo di una cifra sicuramente elevata, che lo rende per ovvie ragioni accessibile a pochi. Ipotizzando il costo delle componenti che differenziano la configurazione da noi provata rispetto al modello base, potremmo ipotizzare poi per quest'ultima un prezzo intorno ai 3.800 euro. Vero è che siamo di fronte ad una soluzione validissima sotto molti aspetti e che riesce a coniugare con raro equilibrio prestazioni elevate, design sobrio e ingombri tutto sommato accettabili; ma diciamolo, 3.800 euro sono in ogni caso tanti, sia in valore assoluto che in relazione ad un notebook come questo. Lo comprerei? Beh, se avessi la disponibilità economica per farlo probabilmente sì, magari aspettando il primo giro di offerte per risparmiare comunque qualche centinaia di euro.

Be in no doubt though that a 17-inch gaming laptop like this is inevitably going to be on the large and heavy side – this is a laptop that's best left where it is, although you can of course take it on the move with you too (it just might be a struggle to get it open on the train). In terms of design, it's restrained enough to appeal to a broad range of people, while still offering some nice flourishes (like the lighting and the tilted keyboard). It's hard to complain about the performance and power you get from the Asus ROG Zephyrus S17, even if we did notice some occasional issues (which a reboot sorted). Add in a great screen, lots of connectivity options, and a certain amount of flexibility in terms of configuration options, and we think it's one of the best gaming laptops around at the moment – provided you have enough in the bank to be able to afford it.

I know, you’re pissed about the lack of an AMD option on this Zephyrus S17 model, but that’s just the way it is. I haven’t run detailed tests on this early sample, but from the little I did run, this Intel platform is no slouch, even if it’s not going to match the Ryzen 9s in terms of efficiency or capabilities in certain multi-threaded scenarios. General demanding loads and especially gaming, on the other hand, that’s where I’m pretty sure this will end up at least competitive.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 Laptop GPU: Scheda grafica per laptop di fascia alta basata sul chip Ampere GA104. Al momento del lancio, all'inizio del 2021, la 3080 è la scheda grafica per laptop più veloce sul mercato.
Queste schede grafiche sono paragonabili alle entusiasmanti schede grafiche desktop, come la 9800M GT. Le schede hanno un core simile alle relative schede desktop, ma hanno un clock inferiore e spesso hanno processori con meno ombre.
