You get a somewhat plain but fairly portable 15-inch design, a spacious keyboard, and strong dual-core performance, all for just a little bit more than the cost of an iPad. Still, we wish the audio and battery life were better. For just $20 more, you can get a similarly configured HP G62t with ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5740 graphics. And, if you want to splurge a little, the $629 Samsung SF510 has a very distinctive design that makes it look far more expensive. Still, you can't quibble with what the Aspire 5742 offers, which is more than enough power for everyday computing.

Granted, you don't get as robust feature set and as many wireless features as you do with the HP Pavilion dv6-6013cl (which has both WiDi2 and WiMAX), and the AS5742-6811 uses first-generation Core i technology, whereas the HP dv6-6013cl touts the newer Sandy Bridge platform. That aside, when it comes to raw computing power the Acer Aspire AS5742-6811 offers the greatbang for your buck in a budget laptop.

Acer: Nel 1976, l'azienda è stata fondata a Taiwan con il nome Multitech e nel 1987 è stata ribattezzata Acer o Acer Group. La gamma di prodotti comprende, ad esempio, laptop, tablet, smartphone, desktop, monitor, TV e periferiche per computer. Dal 2007, il gruppo si è fuso con Gateway Inc. e Packard Bell, che commercializzano anche le proprie linee di prodotti per laptop.
I computer Acer sono progettati per una varietà di scopi, inclusi ultrabook per uso mobile, laptop da gioco per giocatori, opzioni convenienti per le attività quotidiane e laptop convertibili 2 in 1 per la versatilità. Il portafoglio di prodotti Acer comprende anche tablet che offrono capacità informatiche portatili e multimediali.
Soltanto i giochi datasi possono essere giocati in modo fluido con questi chips grafici (se non richiedono troppe prestazioni). P6100: L'Pentium P6100 è una CPU di fascia bassa basata sul core Arrandale. Rispetto al Celeron P4600, il P6100 offre prestazioni leggermente migliori grazie al System Bus più veloce ed all'incremento di Level 3 cache. Tuttavia, non sono disponibili VT-x per il P6100.
P6200: La Pentium P6200 è una CPU di fascia bassa basata sul core Arrandale. Rispetto al Core i3-330M non sfrutta l'HyperThreading con conseguenti prestazioni multi-threaded inferiori.
Intel Core i5:
480M: Il Core i5-480M ha solo 3 MB di L3 Cache (rispetto alla I7-620M) ed un clock tra 2.66-2.9 GHz (Turbo Mode). Grazie all'Hyperthreading, 4 threads possono essere gestiti simultaneamente. Nel pacchetto sono incluse anche una scheda grafica integrata (GMA HD) ed un controller di memoria DDR3.
