Molta acqua è passata sotto i ponti dalla nascita del netbook come concetto di dispositivo ultraportatile a basso costo. Si trattava di un’idea sicuramente interessante, ma anche limitante sotto diversi punti di vista, come ad esempio la potenza di elaborazione, per quanto riguarda soprattutto il comparto multimediale e poi la realizzazione era abbastanza rozza, sia per quanto riguarda la linea che i materiali impiegati, al fine di mantenere il costo il più basso possibile. Ma la tecnologia si sviluppa molto in fretta ed ora i tempi sono più maturi per offrire lo stesso concetto di estrema portabilità di allora, ma con l’adozione di piattaforme hardware molto più appropriate, che uniscono consumi molto contenuti e quindi grande autonomia operativa, con potenze di calcolo decisamente superiori e, con prezzi di poco superiori alla generazione originale, offrono anche una cura realizzativa molto maggiore.

PRO: La piattaforma AMD ha prestazioni e consumi allineati con quella Intel, quindi questo netbook è in grado di concorrere alla pari con gli altri. Il display è ottimo e la qualità costruttiva buona.
CONTRO: La tastiera ha le funzioni secondarie poco leggibili e tende a vibrare durante la digitazione.

The line between netbooks and laptops continues to blur, with screen sizes from 9-inch up to 15-inch in the mix and performance specifications with a similarly wide range. Packard Bell sees its dot s and dot m as mainstream netbooks and the larger of the two, the dot m reviewed here, has an 11.6-inch widescreen LCD and runs on a 1.2GHz, 64-bit Athlon L110 processor with 2GB memory. This is a great little machine, though more a small notebook than an oversized netbook. Vista doesn't hold it back much and the extra memory and strong ATI graphics help with this. However, if you can afford the six-cell battery, go for it, or stay fairly close to a power socket all the time.

Bigger than your regular netbook, the Packard Bell dot m/a offers AMD processors and an 11.6in screen. Breaking away from the pack, the Packard Bell dot m/a has a bigger screen and a potentially faster processor, not to mention a graphics chip that can handle simple games if you drop the quality settings. A generous battery pack is always welcome, although actual runtime is reduced here by the inefficient processors, when compared to an Intel chipset.

In its basic form, the dot m/a is let down badly by its farcically poor battery life but if you can lay hands on one with the six-cell battery for a reasonable price then you will have a very nice machine and one that represents decent value for money. A 10.1in screen Samsung netbook like the NC10 or N110 will set you back between £300 and £350, and neither has the hi-res screen or 2GB of memory of the m/a.

Will Packard Bell's smallest netbook offer big performance? The dot s is Packard Bell's 10.1-inch netbook. Unlike its larger brothers, the dot m and dot m/a, it stays safely in known netbook territory by featuring an Intel Atom processor and running Microsoft's Windows XP operating system. As with the dot m, the sample we reviewed was a pre-production unit so we were not able to provide full benchmarking results, such as battery life testing. While the Packard Bell dot s doesn't really bring anything new to the netbook market, it is a well-rounded machine that should be on most people's list of machines to check out before making a purchase. As long as the touchpad issues are rectified, we are big fans.

Essentially the dot m/a, but from an alternate reality. Packard Bell's second 11.6-inch netbook, the dot m, shares exactly the same chassis as the dot m/a, but differs internally by carrying an Intel Atom processor and running Windows XP software. While the keyboard may not reach the standard we expect, all in all, the Packard Bell dot m proves a great netbook. The screen in particular is fantastic and this machine is certainly worth a look.

Packard Bell has relaunched itself, now under the wing of Acer, and for the first time has brought two netbook models to the UK. Some wireless options are lacking, and the Packard Bell dot s feels smaller than other 10in netbooks, but the price is competitive when set against some other netbooks with long-life credentials. The Packard Bell dot m/a, also known in some circles as the Gateway LT3100, does away with the Intel norm in favour of an AMD Athlon L110 CPU. It also plumps for a larger-than-usual 11.6-inch screen and a slightly wider chassis, pushing it dangerously near laptop territory. The Packard Bell dot m/a is a good netbook, particularly for anyone seeking a larger screen than normal. It's slightly bigger than many of its rivals and its battery life is merely average, but it has an excellent keyboard and would make for a great second computer.

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 950: Il nuovo core di grafica Intel® GMA 950 è un motore grafico intelligente e dai tempi di risposta rapidi integrato nel chipset presente sulla scheda madre. Non propriamente adatta per giocare.

Queste schede grafiche per portatili non sono adatte al gaming. Anche se dovessero funzionare, ci sarebbero diversi errori grafici e un frame rate molto basso. Questi chips non sono affatto per i gamers! Applicazioni internet e da ufficio, invece non sono problematiche per queste GPUs.

Intel Atom:

La Intel Atom è una serie a 64-Bit di microprocessori (non tutti i modelli supportano 64bit) per portatili economici e piccoli (chiamati comunemente netbooks), MIDs, o UMPCs (Ultra Mibile Persona Computer). La particolarità della nuova architettura è l'esecuzione "in order" (al posto della consueta e più veloce esecuzione "out of order"). Di conseguenza il transistor count della serie Atom è abbastanza inferiore, e quindi più economico da produrre. Inoltre, il consumo di energia è molto contenuto. Le prestazioni per Megahertz sono ovviamente peggiori rispetto ai vecchi Pentium 3M (1,2 GHz alla pari di 1.6 GHz Atom).

N270: CPU single core economico e lento, a basso consumo, per Netbook. A causa dell'esecuzione in-order, le prestazioni per MHz sono peggiori rispetto ad un processore Core Solo o ad un Celeron M.

Packard Bell: Packard Bell è una controllata della Taiwanese Acer. E' un nome usato da due diverse aziende di elettronica. La prima era una azienda che produce va radio fondata nel 1926, la seconda è stata una fornitrice della difesa di apparecchiature elettroniche come televisori. Teledyne la acquisì nel 1978. Nel 1986, investitori acquisirono il nome per una nuova azienda di produzione di personal computer. In origine l'azienda produceva computers a basso costo per gli USA, ma in seguito furono prodotti anche per il mercato europeo. NEC ha preso il controllo alla fine degli anni '90. Acer ha acquisito il tutto nel 2008. Nonostante il nome simile, non c'è mai stata alcuna connessione tra la originaria Packard Bell e la Hewlett Packard, o la Bell System. Packard Bell è un produttore di notebook internazionale, ma con una fetta di mercato e di recensioni contenute. Sino ad ora (2009), l'azienda si è concentrata su laptops corazzati.
