Ultimately, whether the LaVie Z will meet your needs depends on how light of a laptop you want, how much you're willing to pay, and whether flimsy-feeling devices make you uncomfortable. There's certainly a market for the laptop, but most people will likely find one of Lenovo's slightly heavier but much cheaper laptops perfectly suitable for their needs.

Lenovo LaVie Z and LaVie Z 360 Review - Unparalleled Portability

On one hand, I really want to love the LaVie-Z. Ever since we saw a preview of this machine at CES it has been on my radar as a potential replacement for my mid-2013 MacBook Air. I am a true believer in lightweight laptops, and my MacBook serves the purpose that some people use a tablet for – I bring it with me everywhere. Cutting that weight substantially again with the LaVie-Z was a very intriguing proposition.

If you’re looking for a lightweight device with top-notch performance than the Lenovo LaVie Z certainly meets those criteria. The LaVie should be the ideal travel laptop, due to its ridiculously lightweight design and productivity focused specs, but it’s not. The keyboard with its rearranged button layout feels awkward to use, battery life is somewhat limited for an ultrabook and the display’s limited brightness of the anti-glare display can make colors appear somewhat faded.

Let's be clear: Lenovo's LaVie Z deserves huge praise for weighing in at just 1.87 pounds. It's an engineering feat, and what's even more impressive is that there's a potent Core i7-5500U processor, 8GB of RAM, and a fast SSD in there. What you're looking at is the year's most powerful Ultrabook under 2 pounds, which is impressive in and of itself.

Lenovo's LaVie Z is certainly the lightest 13-inch laptop on the market making it seem like a lesser computer than the components in it. Performance is great but there are enough issues that hold it back from being a superb system. Still, this is an extremely well engineered machine that is sturdier than it feels.

Weighing a mere 1.8 pounds, the Lenovo LaVie Z laptop is the perfect weight and size for a travel laptop, and its fifth-generation Intel processor packs a hearty punch. I'm also very appreciative of the healthy number of ports considering its size. However, for the price, I'd expect longer battery life and a brighter, more vibrant display.

You could hand either LaVie Z we reviewed to someone and there's a good chance they'd ask if it was a hollow plastic mockup rather than a fully functioning laptop.

There's no denying that the Lenovo LaVie Z is one of the most significant laptop introductions of the year. The very idea of a powerful Core i7 system with full-sized ports in a convenient, take-it-anywhere package weighing under two pounds would have seemed like science fiction not long ago. But while the form factor is fantastic and the CPU gives you ample horsepower, the keyboard is anything but convenient and slows you down.

But it also suffers from an inelegant design and a frustrating keyboard. There's a real disconnect between what Apple, Samsung and others can do with slim 13-inch laptop aesthetics, and what we're seeing here.

The Lenovo LaVie Z meets the demands of tablet users pretty well. It’s easily expandable, has a terrific display and it feels like it weighs less than most cups of coffee. Lenovo set out to make a machine for the mobile warrior and it succeeded on the major bullet points. You can run any app, or program with this machine and actually have enough storage space to hold all of your essentials without extra media. 9 hours of battery life is pretty impressive in a package this light and small.

Ultimately, the Lenovo LaVie Z 360's asking price is too high for what it actually is. Sure, it's lighter than any 2-in-1 laptop on Earth, but the cuts made to get there have severely hamper its versatility. If you're looking for a machine that offers more modes of use, then the HP Spectre x360 and, more so, the Acer Aspire R13 should be up your alley. Both of these rivals are also better choices if you're looking for a longer lasting machine, especially the Spectre x360.

Lenovo's convertible version of the LaVie Z may be the lightest 13-inch convertible on the market even surpassing the Yoga 3 Pro, but the price makes for a less than stellar offering. The system does offer a lot of performance and a very good display but there are just enough issues combined with the price that just hold it back too much.

All told, the LaVie Z 360 leaves us torn. We love its amazingly lightweight design, solid build quality, first-rate display, and snappy performance. What ultimately prevents us from recommending it is its mangled keyboard layout. We were constantly hunting and pecking at the keyboard because its design is that bizarre compared to a conventional English keyboard.

The LaVie Z 360 is a roller coaster of highs and lows. Its peaks includes some of the best performance I've seen on any ultraportable -- 2-in-1 or otherwise -- and its logic-defying 2-pound body makes competing systems feel like they're in need of some help from Jenny Craig. But its dim screen, short battery life and weak speakers fall short of delivering the kind of convertible that a $1,699 system needs to be.

Lenovo: Lenovo ("Le" dalla leggenda inglese, novo (latino) per nuovo) è stata fondata nel 1984 come società cinese di commercio di computer. Nel 2004, l'azienda era il più grande produttore di laptop in Cina e, dopo aver acquisito la divisione PC di IBM nel 2005, il quarto più grande al mondo. Oltre a desktop e notebook, l'azienda produce monitor, proiettori, server, ecc. ed è specializzata nello sviluppo, produzione e commercializzazione di elettronica di consumo, personal computer, software, soluzioni aziendali e servizi correlati.

Nel 2016, l'azienda si è classificata al primo posto al mondo nelle vendite di computer. Lo deteneva ancora nel 2023 con una quota di mercato globale di circa il 23%. Importanti linee di prodotti sono Thinkpad, Legion e Ideapad.
