I suoi limiti vengono fuori con decisione nel momento in cui proviamo a sforzarlo con giochi, multitasking pesante e cercando di lavorarci seriamente. Non è nato per questo, come non lo è nessun tablet sotto i 100 euro. In quest’ultimo caso può comunque fungere da copertura “di emergenza”, ancor di più se ampliamo le sue possibilità installando i servizi Google. Si può migliorare insomma, ma in sostanza è un buon lavoro da parte di Amazon.

A maggior ragione, il best buy per eccellenza da questo punto di vista sarebbe, a dire il vero, la versione Fire HD 8 Plus. Disponibile al momento negli Stati Uniti ma non sul mercato italiano, ha la possibilità della ricarica wireless e, soprattutto, di acquistare una docking station che la trasforma in un Amazon Echo Show. In pratica, con 140 dollari ci si porta a casa un tablet che diventa anche smart speaker, con display collegato ad Alexa: un'opzione, questa sì, davvero interessante.

Non abbiamo i servizi di Google pur essendo un tablet basato su Android. Il software è personalizzato da Amazon e nello store di Amazon non sono presenti tutte le applicazioni. Non si trova, ad esempio, Meet che è una di quelle app che su tablet serve di più. Ma soprattutto, le app che si trovano sono sempre 2-3 upgrade indietro rispetto alla stessa applicazione presente sullo store di Google.

Anche se questo Amazon Fire HD 8 è il modello 2020, quello che subito risalta appena lo si guarda e utilizza, solo le cornici che fanno venire in mente dispositivi di altri tempi, ma maneggevolezza e touch & feel davvero ottimo, sono davvero ottimi.

Amazon Fire HD 8 è un tablet di fascia bassa che rientra in un mondo a parte rispetto agli altri dispositivi Android. La società di Jeff Bezos ha creato una propria personalizzazione software, che, pur mancando dei servizi Google, è in grado di svolgere bene praticamente tutte le classiche operazioni che l'utente medio effettua con un dispositivo di questo tipo. L'hardware non è dei migliori, ma l'ottimizzazione consente di sfruttarlo al massimo delle sue possibilità, garantendo delle buone prestazioni. A queste ultime si aggiungono un ottimo schermo (seppur con risoluzione HD), una buona autonomia, un comparto audio con doppio altoparlante e un supporto software migliore rispetto alla maggior parte delle altre soluzioni low cost. Peccato solamente per una ricarica non delle più rapide e qualche altra sbavatura (scocca in plastica, niente Face Unlock). In ogni caso, per 99 euro è decisamente difficile trovare di meglio.

Le novità di questo Fire HD 8 non sono straordinarie ma sono sufficienti per far diventare il prezzo di 99€ veramente stracciato. Schermo HD luminoso, porta USB-C, ottima autonomia, presenza di jack audio e integrazione con Amazon, sono i suoi punti di forza.

For years now, I've recommended Amazon's Fire line as my favorite affordable tablets. The current Fire HD 8 continues that legacy. Don't buy the 7-inch Fire, which has inadequate RAM; if you're getting a small Amazon tablet, get this one. (There's also the aforementioned Fire HD 8 Plus that adds more RAM and wireless charging, which we'll review soon.) But I feel like the value equation has wobbled as Amazon's Appstore continues to lack important apps, and Amazon has made it harder to load apps from other sources. That means you're going to have to make the call based on what you want to use your cheap tablet for, and it isn't as clear as it used to be. If you're satisfied by Amazon's content library, plus the streaming services supported here, go for the Fire HD 8. Otherwise you'll sacrifice some battery life, but gain considerable flexibility with Walmart's $64 Onn. 8-inch tablet, which has the standard Google Play store.

If you are happy to persevere with Amazon’s heavy sales tactics then the Amazon Fire HD 8 is about the first Amazon-branded tablet that I have used that I feel like I can actually recommend. Are there better Android tablets out there? 100%. But I’ve been pleasantly surprised with the Fire HD 8 so much that I have used it a fair amount more than I actually expected.

For casual TV watching and music listening, the Fire HD 8's screen and speakers prove it to be a solid device for all the basics, and its USB-C port means you can charge it with the same cable your new laptop uses. Though, considering the HD 8’s epic battery life, you won’t need to refuel it often. The Fire HD 8 wouldn't feel so compromised, though, if it could just get Google apps, so you could use Chrome and not rely on Amazon's Silk web browser.
