If you’re looking for a laptop with all-day battery life predominantly to be used for work, the Latitude 3340 is a more than competent choice. It’s slightly let down by its poor screen, which is a real shame but if your work doesn’t require accurate colours you’ll be able to get by. If you want better performance, and don’t mind sacrificing some battery life, the Dell Inspiron 15 5000 is a better choice.

The Dell Latitude 3340 is not a notebook you will long to own for its sense of style. However, its tough design, incredible battery life and reasonable price make it a great option for the intended educational market. We would have liked to see options for 8GB RAM and a higher-resolution screen with better viewing angles, but nevertheless, this is a notebook that suits its school and child orientation very well.

Like all laptops, the Latitude 13 is about compromise, about finding a balance among performance, battery life, cost, and portability. Its durable construction makes it a few ounces heavier than we'd like at 4.1 pounds, but otherwise it pretty much hits the sweet spot, offering decent performance and over 10 hours of battery life for an attractive price.

The Dell works well for education: the strong, rubberised exterior make it tough, there's a Gorilla Glass screen, the keyboard is excellent and the battery life is class-leading. It's also got broad configuration options, which is important for this type of machine. This Latitude isn't expensive, and that does mean downsides.

Laptops designed for education are rare, but Dell has worked hard to ensure that this machine will stand up to classrooms: the tough, rubberised chassis, Gorilla Glass screen, fantastic keyboard and ample battery life all work in its favour. The poor quality screen is problematic, but if you can look past this it's a smart laptop that it's a good option if you need a rugged laptop for a child that won't break the bank.
