But after putting it through its paces, we just can’t possibly recommend it for anyone who hopes to do anything more than typing e-mail and surfing – both at a snail’s pace. Sony could be excused for charging three times as much as a netbook for this system if it delivered acceptable performance, or excused for releasing it with its existing level of performance at a reasonable price level. But paying a hefty price premium for a good-looking slab that won’t do anything just doesn’t fly. We have high hopes for the 1.86GHz variant that’s kicking around Japan, and even for a Windows 7 version in the future, but right now, this notebook simply doesn’t justify its price. Unless you value looks above all else, a $400 netbook makes an infinitely better purchase for basic productivity.

Take the LCD as an example: packing a 1,600 x 768 native resolution into a screen with an eight-inch diagonal is simply phenomenal, but it’ll alienate a large potential userbase because you really need a magnifying glass to read even fairly normal sized text. We’re big fans of tight pixel pitches, but this decision baffles us, no matter how impressive it is from a technological standpoint. It makes us wonder exactly what the motivations were for the product when it was still on the drawing board – it’s as if Sony tried to pack as much technology into a pre-determined form factor in order to showcase its major breakthrough in panel technology.

Is it worth $900 when you can get a similar laptop for less money? That depends on what matters to you. The VAIO P has a revolutionary design, an extremely high-resolution display, and a few features you won't find in a $500 netbook. That said, it still uses a relatively weak processor and isn't designed to be a primary computer. If you plan to use the VAIO P as your primary family PC and multimedia center then you will probably be disappointed. If you plan to purchase the VAIO P as a lightweight travel laptop it might just be the perfect laptop on the market.

Sony doesn't do netbooks, but if it did the Vaio P would be one. It is small and neat. It weighs just 0.6kg and it measures 245 x 120 x 19.8mm. Picture those measurements in your mind and you'll visualise a wide, thin notebook, which is precisely what the Vaio P is. Sony's Vaio P is a stunning looking piece of kit. But we aren't so sure about its capabilities or its value for money. Neither cheap enough to compete with netbooks nor efficient enough to compete with notebooks, it is difficult to see where it really fits in.

While some would welcome the better processor speeds and cache, new touchpad, and display orientation; others would not think these options were worth sending their old VAIO P in or buying the refresh altogether. Whether or not this redesign is worth the higher price tag or not is up to individual taste and preference. This refresh has improved the processing speed and cache size but stuck with the Intel Atom, greatly improved the standard battery life, added a touchpad and an orientation and display switch option, improved the outer casing style, and more—all the while keeping the ultraportability of the prior version.

Sony: Sony Corporation è una multinazionale con sede principale in Giappone. Sony è una delle principali aziende in campo elettronico, video, comunicazione, consolles video game, e prodotti di information technology sia per consumatori che per professionisti. Il suo nome deriva da sonus, la parola Latina che significa suono. L'azienda è stata fondata nel 1946 con un altro nome, e poi rinominata nel 1958. Sony Corporation è l'unità che si occupa del settore elettronica e da parte del Gruppo Sony, che è impegnato in cinque diversi segmenti dell'elettronica, giochi, intrattenimento (films e musica), servizi finanziari ed altro. Sony è un produttore di portatili di media dimensione sulla base dei dati di mercato.
Queste schede grafiche per portatili non sono adatte al gaming. Anche se dovessero funzionare, ci sarebbero diversi errori grafici e un frame rate molto basso. Questi chips non sono affatto per i gamers! Applicazioni internet e da ufficio, invece non sono problematiche per queste GPUs.

Intel Atom:
La Intel Atom è una serie a 64-Bit di microprocessori (non tutti i modelli supportano 64bit) per portatili economici e piccoli (chiamati comunemente netbooks), MIDs, o UMPCs (Ultra Mibile Persona Computer). La particolarità della nuova architettura è l'esecuzione "in order" (al posto della consueta e più veloce esecuzione "out of order"). Di conseguenza il transistor count della serie Atom è abbastanza inferiore, e quindi più economico da produrre. Inoltre, il consumo di energia è molto contenuto. Le prestazioni per Megahertz sono ovviamente peggiori rispetto ai vecchi Pentium 3M (1,2 GHz alla pari di 1.6 GHz Atom).
Z520: CPU single core energeticamente efficiente con prestazioni molto contenute. Offre maggiori features (risparmio energetico, VT-x) rispetto alla serie N Atoms.
Z540: Processore Atom a risparmio energetico (più efficiente rispetto alla serie N) da 1.83 GHz e di conseguenza un po' più veloce rispetto ai soliti Atoms da 1.6 GHz.
8.0: Questo è un formato molto piccolo, usato per gli UMPC, Netbooks e Subnotebooks. Difficilmente esistono modelli con questo tipo di formato di display. Lavorarci a lungo non è comodo. Questi minuscoli display sono destinati all'utilizzo in ambienti aperti. Il vantaggio è, che i mini-notebook possono avere dimensioni ridotte e possono essere trasportati facilmente. Inoltre gli schermi minuscoli hanno il vantaggio che richiedono poca energia, il che migliora l'autonomia della batteria e di conseguenza la mobilità. Lo svantaggio è che la lettura di testi è estenuante per gli occhi. Risoluzioni elevate difficilmente potranno essere utilizzate.

Questo subnotebook è uno dei più leggeri di tutti i portatili e può essere trasportato con estrema semplicità. Difficilmente si trovano altri modelli in questa fascia di peso.
7-9 pollici sono la norma per questa categoria di peso.
