This is a shame, as it's just as well built as other Lumia phones and its funky set of colours offer a great alternative to the swathe of budget black and white Android phones available. Still, if you're set on getting a cheap Windows phone, the Lumia 630 is a much better buy than this poor first effort, as it's not only much quicker and easier to use, but it also has a much longer-lasting battery.

What I can say, however, is that the Lumia 535 is a promising budget phone. It looks great and has a decent, though not spectacular, feature set. My only serious concern is whether the Snapdragon 200 processor that held back the Lumia 530 will do the same here. We'll know more once we get a final version to test.

What I can say, however, is that the Lumia 535 is a promising budget phone. It looks great and has a decent, though not spectacular, feature set. My only serious concern is whether the Snapdragon 200 processor that held back the Lumia 530 will do the same here. We'll know more once we get a final version to test.

Another reason I’ve been less forgiving with the Lumia 640 is because of its price point. At $200-250 (depending on the market) unlocked and outright, the Lumia 640 tends to be slightly expensive than the 2014 Motorola Moto G, which is as a competing entry-level smartphone is better across the board. Had the Lumia 640 offered a better value, it would be worth considering. Unfortunately it is not, which makes it hard to recommend.

During pre-launch interactions, Microsoft said it is positioning the Lumia 640 XL against Samsung's Grand series of mid-range, large-screen devices; explicitly dismissing the challenge posed by the likes of Xiaomi, Micromax, and others in the same segment. The company seems to have missed that the Grand series no longer enjoys the mindshare it once did, and by pricing the phone at Rs. 15,799, Microsoft certainly fails to acknowledge the existence of the likes of Xiaomi Redmi Note and Micromax's Yu Yureka, which offer similar specifications - and an ecosystem with a much bigger collection of apps - at nearly half the price.
