The Wind U123 brings a lot of muscle to the netbook arena: It’s slightly faster and has a much longer battery life than any we’ve previously tested, though the nine-cell battery adds bulk to the otherwise sleek netbook. And the bright screen is sure to win fans. But there are certainly netbooks out there that are lighter, easier to upgrade, and offer similar performance, even if they can’t quite match the battery life.

MSI’s Wind U123 is a solid value. It’s not the fastest netbook we’ve tested or the lightest one we’ve hefted, but its specs are definitely respectable and it boasts a number of excellent features, including a bright and gorgeous display. The oversized battery adds a lot of bulk to the package, but you’ll forget about that the first time you’re able to work an entire day without having to plug into an AC outlet.

The MSI Wind U123 is essentially a slightly modified version of their U120 netbook. It shares the same exterior appearance, keyboard and trackpad design. The biggest difference is a move to a slightly faster Atom N280 processor and a 802.11n compatible wireless. While some models of the U123 comes with a 9-cell battery, the U123-019US uses a 6-cell battery which results in a below average running time compared to similarly netbooks. Still, at just $350, it is a very affordable netbook considering some of its features.

In fact, the identically priced Toshiba NB205-310 is equally attractive and offers an impressive number of unique features, and it lasted more than twice as long as the U123 did in our tests. You just won't be able to run OS X on the Toshiba--if that matters to you at all.

The original MSI Wind burst onto the scene in spectacular fashion, nabbing the first-ever Editors' Choice in the netbook category. Of course, it helped that this fledgling field wasn't the mob scene it is today. The Wind U123 (003US) ($385 street) is a nice follow-up, and it's full of life—battery life, that is. Its 87Wh battery is the biggest battery yet found on a netbook, though it was added at the expense of making this model look like the Hunchback of Notre Dame (though the hump is on the bottom). Overall the U123 could use more of a lift, as its performance scores fell well short of the competition, and everything else is just middle of the road. The only differentiating feature in the MSI Wind U123 (003US) netbook is the humongous battery, which sticks out like a sore thumb.

At first glance, the MSI Wind U123 looks to be just a restyled update of the Wind U100, a 2008 model that was one of the first 10.2-inch netbooks. Most of the changes are appreciated but not spectacular: The MSI Wind U123 sports a restyled chassis, as well as the slightly faster Intel Atom N280 processor that was introduced on the Asus Eee PC 1000HE. Though most of the MSI Wind U123's specs follow the standard netbook formula, its incredible battery life makes it a standout.

MSI’s latest netbook packs a slightly faster Atom processor and a nine-cell battery that outruns the competition. For just $379, the MSI Wind U123 offers good performance for a netbook and more than 8 hours of endurance. While the similarly configured ASUS Eee PC 1000HE ($399) and Samsung N110 ($469) have more comfortable touchpads and slightly better keyboards, the MSI Wind offers a complete package for a very competitive price.

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 950: Il nuovo core di grafica Intel® GMA 950 è un motore grafico intelligente e dai tempi di risposta rapidi integrato nel chipset presente sulla scheda madre. Non propriamente adatta per giocare.

Soltanto i giochi datasi possono essere giocati in modo fluido con questi chips grafici (se non richiedono troppe prestazioni). I cores con memoria grafica condivisa in questa categoria hanno il vantaggio delle minori emissioni di calore e della maggiore autonomia della batteria. Per ufficio, internet, image processing, e video editing queste schede grafiche sono utilizzabili senza particolari problematiche.

Intel Atom:

La Intel Atom è una serie a 64-Bit di microprocessori (non tutti i modelli supportano 64bit) per portatili economici e piccoli (chiamati comunemente netbooks), MIDs, o UMPCs (Ultra Mibile Persona Computer). La particolarità della nuova architettura è l'esecuzione "in order" (al posto della consueta e più veloce esecuzione "out of order"). Di conseguenza il transistor count della serie Atom è abbastanza inferiore, e quindi più economico da produrre. Inoltre, il consumo di energia è molto contenuto. Le prestazioni per Megahertz sono ovviamente peggiori rispetto ai vecchi Pentium 3M (1,2 GHz alla pari di 1.6 GHz Atom).

N280: CPU single core economico e lento, a basso consumo, per Netbook. A causa dell'esecuzione in-order, le prestazioni per MHz sono peggiori rispetto ad un processore Core Solo o ad un Celeron M. Rispetto alla N270, la N280 ha un clock minimamente superiore ed offre un maggiore FSB.

10.0": Il netbook/subnotebook ha un formato di display abbastanza piccolo. Tuttavia di tratta di un formato comune per i netbooks. Lo svantaggio è che la lettura di testi è estenuante per gli occhi. Risoluzioni elevate difficilmente potranno essere utilizzate.

1.35 kg: Questo subnotebook è uno dei più leggeri di tutti i portatili e può essere trasportato con estrema semplicità. Difficilmente si trovano altri modelli in questa fascia di peso.
