All things said, the MSI GT660 is a very good gaming laptop for a price of Rs. 1,39,999 with two year international warranty. The 17-inch Alienware M17x currently packs in a better processor (Core i7-820QM) and graphics (ATI Radeon HD 4870M) and comes with a 1920x1200 widescreen display, but lesser RAM and hard drive space for Rs. 1,48,999. Still, the MSI GT660 provides a great balance between performance and portability, sitting between the highly portable Alienware M11x and the heavyweight Alienware M17x. And the MSI GT660 has superior onboard sound courtesy of its Dynaudio speakers. If you’re shopping for a portable gaming laptop, be sure to consider the MSI GT660.

The $1,849 MSI GT660 is a solid mid-size gaming rig that balances portability with powerful graphics. However, we wish that the screen resolution was higher than 1366 x 768, and that MSI made a few different choices when it came to keyboard design. Consumers willing to sacrifice portability for greater performance and a larger, 18-inch full HD screen may prefer the Qosmio X505, which is just $50 more. And for true portability, the Alienware M11x can't be beat. Still, there's something to be said for notebooks like the MSI GT660 that sit in the middle, offering a great gaming experience without overwhelming your back.

The GT660R-004US is one of the cheaper of the gaming/multimedia machines on the market right now. The big tradeoff here is that the screen is not that great. This machine would be a much better notebook if the screen had better contrast and more resolution. I can’t see that a 1080p screen that functions better would have added much more to the cost of the notebook. As it is, if you can live with the poor contrast and pixilation when watching movies and streaming content, this is a good machine. If you demand perfect video performance, the screen here will drive you crazy in short order. The machine does well for mid-range gaming on most titles and will serve the person wanting a gaming/multimedia machine on a budget well. If you aren’t much of a gamer and are really looking for a notebook mostly for media streaming, you can find better notebooks with screens that offer more performance in this price range. That said, most of those machines will lack the Blu-ray and gaming chops the GT660R-004US offers.

MSI:

Queste schede grafiche sono paragonabili alle entusiasmanti schede grafiche desktop, come la 9800M GT. Le schede hanno un core simile alle relative schede desktop, ma hanno un clock inferiore e spesso hanno processori con meno ombre. I giochi moderni come Age of Conan, Race Driver Grid, Call of Duty 4, Mass Effect, o Gothic 3 dovrebbero scorrere in modo fluido con dettagli elevati (Crysis dovrebbe funzionare con dettagli medio alti).

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 285M: Un clock leggermente superiore alla GTX 280M che si basa ancora sul core G92b. Circa del 3-6% più veloce.

Intel Core i7:

620M: Il Core i7-620M e la CPU Dual-Core più veloce per portatili (al momento del lancio nel 2010). La 620M ha un clock tra i 2.66 ed i 3.33 GHz grazie al Turbo Mode ed all'Hyperthreading, possono essere eseguiti 4 simultaneamente. Nella confezione, Intel include anche una GPU integrata (GMA HD) ed un controller di memoria. Di conseguenza, il TDP di 35 Watt dell'intero pacchetto risulta comunque buono.

740QM: Il Core i7-740QM è una CPU quad-core di fascia alta per portatili (nel 2010) con un clock rate di base relativamente contenuto ed una elevata frequenza massima di Turbo Boost di 2.93 GHz (per un core). Pertanto, combina i vantaggi delle veloci CPUs single core e delle lente CPUs quad-core. Rispetto alle più veloci CPUs Core i7 mobile, la 740QM ha solo 6MB di L3 Cache.

Intel Core i5:

460M: L'Intel Core i5-460M è una CPU dual core di fascia alta per portatili ed ha un clock (grazie al Turbo Mode) da 2.53 a 2.8 GHz. Ogni core si basa sulla micro architettura Nehalem (Westemere). L'hyperthreading consente alla CPU Dual Core di gestire 4 threads contemporaneamente (per un miglior utilizzo della pipeline).

15.6: La variante di display da 15 pollici rientra tra lo standard ed è utilizzata da più della metà di tutti i portatili. I display da 15.4 pollici in 16:10 sono lo standard per i portatili. Attualmente, sempre più appaiono i displays 16:9 da 15.6 pollici. Lo svantaggio è che la lettura di testi è estenuante per gli occhi. Risoluzioni elevate difficilmente potranno essere utilizzate.

16.0: Le varianti di display da 16 pollici esistono sin dal 2008 ed hanno parzialmente assorbito la fetta di mercato dei portatili da 15 pollici. La ragione per cui così tante persone preferiscono displays con dimensioni medie dipende dal fatto che tale dimensione non crea particolari problemi alla vista, non richiede troppa energia ed i portatili riescono ad avere dimensioni abbastanza compatte.

Questo peso è medio per i notebooks. Di conseguenza la numerosità di portatili con schermo da 15-16 pollici è condizionata proprio dal peso.
