Overall we're very conflicted about the Envy 13. Hardware wise it's one of our favorite laptops ever, but the trackpad almost destroys all of that good will built up by the other elements -- no matter how great a laptop is, if it's painful to interact with on the go (without an external mouse), what's the point? We also have to say that Windows 7 doesn't make this laptop crazy delicious in any particular manner. It's certainly a better OS than Vista, but it's not so much better to make it a huge selling point in our book or a lure for folks who don't normally walk the Windows path, since many of the traditional pitfalls are still present. All we can say in summary is that we hope HP manages to update the trackpad drivers very, very soon, and that other PC manufacturers steal a bit from HP's and / or Apple's in other respects, since it seems to be working.

The HP Envy 13 is a handsome laptop with more than a hint of the Apple MacBook Pro.Under the HP Envy 13's hood you get a decent amount of juice, comparable to that of a 13-inch MacBook Pro: a 2.13GHz Intel Core 2 Duo SL9600 processor, 3GB of RAM, and an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4330 discrete GPU. The HP Envy 13 has a lot of eye-catching touches. This is a good machine for people that have money to burn.

It looks and feels like, but isn't, a MacBook...Envy 13 is the PC's answer for slim, stylish computing - only more expensive. All that aside, the Envy 13 has a lot of eye-catching touches. Let's not forget that last year's HP Voodoo Envy 133 (hmm, I wonder where that "Voodoo" name went off to, anyhow?) was even more expensive and was amazingly underpowered compared with a MacBook back then. This is a good machine for people that have money to burn. Once we get our performance results back from the labs, I'll circle back and tell you if it's fully worth said cash.

HP’s premium ultraportable offers excellent performance and an elegant design, but its touchpad could be better. There’s no question that the HP Envy 13 is a stylish and powerful system. It’s a sexy ultraportable that delivers the performance of a much larger machine. Everything from the Envy’s packaging down to the glass display says that this is a premium notebook. But therein lies the problem: When you’re paying $1,899—$400 more than the most expensive 13-inch MacBook Pro—you’re less forgiving about certain flaws, and the issues with the Envy 13’s touchpad are too great to ignore. We also wish the system lasted longer on a charge without having to add the battery slice. The Envy 13 is worth the splurge for those looking for the most powerful 13-inch notebook in a most portable package, but we hope the ergonomic experience improves with updates.

The Envy line, as you may recall, was a synonymous with Voodoo PC—a custom PC builder that HP acquired several years ago. The Envy moniker reemerges under new direction, starting with the HP Envy 13 ($1,899 direct, as tested)—a sleek 13-inch ultraportable with switchable graphics, excellent battery options, and a fantastic resolution. The HP Envy 13 is an all-metallic ultraportable that delivered phenomenal battery scores, but customers may not be ready to spend $1,899 on a laptop.

Even a cursory glance will tell you the HP Envy 13 is a very nicely made premium 13-inch laptop. It's a solid slab of aluminum and magnesium, etched with interesting visual details, and filled with capable components, such as a dual-core low-voltage Intel CPU and discrete ATI graphics. HP's upscale Envy 13 looks and feels like an expensive status symbol, with performance and features that impress us--but its high price makes it a tough sell over the similar-looking MacBook Pro.

ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4330: La ATI Mobilty Radeon HD 4330 della AMD è una scheda grafica DirectX 10.1 per portatili di fascia bassa. Tecnicamente è una Mobility HD 4530 con un clock inferiore.
Le prestazioni di gioco della ATI Mobility Radeon HD4330 si collocano sotto la HD 4350. I giochi datati DirectX 9 dovrebbero essere utilizzabili con dettagli medi. Le prestazioni potrebbero non bastare per giochi pesanti come GTA 4 o Crysis.

Ridurre la distanza delle Schede Grafiche per gli utenti che vogliono utilizzare il videogiochi. I nuovi giochi dovrebbero funzionare su queste schede, ma con riduzione dei dettagli e risoluzione mediocre.

Intel Core 2 Duo: Questo è il successore del Core Duo e del Core Solo con una pipeline più lunga ed il 5-20% di velocità in più senza avere maggiore consumo di energia. Come aggiunta al design del Core Duo esiste un quarto decoder, una unità amplificata SSE ed una unità logica aritmetica (ALU) addizionale. Il Core 2 Duo per portatili è identico al processore per desktop Core 2 Duo ma il processore per portatili lavora con un voltaggio inferiore (0.95 a 1188 Volt) ed un Frontside bus clock inferiore (1066 vs 667 MHz). Le prestazioni di portatili con clock equivalenti sono inferiori del 20-25% rispetto ai PCs Desktop a causa del Frontside bus clock inferiore e agli hard disks più lenti.

SL9400: CPU a basso voltaggio e risparmio energetico che sfrutta una ampia Level 2 Cache da 6MB. Di conseguenza, le prestazioni sono migliori rispetto alle altre Core 2 Duo da 1.86 GHz (che hanno in genere 1-3MB di Level 2 Cache).

13.1": Questo è in formato di display comune per i subnotebooks. Netbooks, UMPC ed alcuni subnotebooks hanno displays più piccoli. Tuttavia, la maggioranza dei portatili standard hanno formati superiori. Lo svantaggio è che la lettura di testi è estenuante per gli occhi. Risoluzioni elevate difficilmente potranno essere utilizzate.

1.7 kg: Questi sub-notebooks sono in media più leggeri rispetto ai notebooks, ma rappresentano la categoria più pesante tra i sub-notebooks.
