Remember the Gateway NV7915u? Back in our Spring 2010 retail roundup of laptops, the budget-priced 17-incher won our Best of Budget category, and also received an Editors' Choice recommendation. The Gateway NV7901u has a large screen, a Core i5 processor and very good graphics at a reasonable price, but leaving Blu-ray out of the package might be a deal-breaker for some.

For the budget minded users, the HP Pavilion dv7t and the Gateway NV79 are godsends. The Gateway NV7901u offers a large display, the newest Core CPU, a built-in DVD drive and strong dedicated graphics power, all under $1,000. Sure it’s over 7 pounds, but the notebook looks modern and it’s pretty thin for a 17.3” beast.

If you can deal with its stiff touch button and reflective display, the $849 Gateway NV7901u is a strong choice for people who want a notebook with a screen large enough to multitask and watch movies. And it has the power to play most of the latest games. The Acer 5740G, which has the same specs and offers slightly better framerates for $749, may seem like the better deal, we’d give the edge to the Gateway, which has a larger and a higher resolution screen.

Queste schede grafiche dovrebbero essere in grado di far funzionare tutti i giochi attuali con un framerates fluido ma rinunciando al livello di dettaglio massimo. Specialmente i giochi impegnativi come Crysis, Age of Conan, o Mass Effect sono utilizzabili soltanto con impostazioni grafiche ridotte. I giochi meno pesanti (e più datati), come Fifa 08, Command & Conquer 3, o Battlefield 2142 possono essere giocati con livello di dettagli più alto.

Intel Core i5:

430M: Il Core i5-430M è una CPU dual core di media classe che sfrutta solo 3 MB di L3 Cache (rispetto alla I7-640M) ed ha un clock tra 2.26-2.53 GHz (Turbo Mode). Inoltre, nella 430M mancano VT-d, trusted Execution e funzioni AES. Grazie all'Hyperthreading, possono essere gestiti 4 threads contemporaneamente. Nel pacchetto sono incluse anche una scheda grafica integrata (Intel HD Graphics da 500-733 MHz) ed un controller memoria DDR3.

17.3": Allo stesso tempo i display da 17 pollici sono offerti più frequentemente come formato standard per i desktop-replacements. I portatili DTR non sono facili da trasportare, richiedono molta più energia ma in compenso i testi possono essere letti facilmente e le risoluzioni elevate non sono problematiche. I DTR sono principalmente destinati ad un utilizzo stazionario da scrivania, dove il peso ed i consumi non sono rilevanti.
