The Dell Studio 17 performed very well as a multimedia-oriented desktop-replacement notebook. The system includes everything you might want, including great speakers, very nice screen options, a fast processor, and a very capable graphics card. Compared to the ASUS G51J or Acer 8940G which offer NVIDIA 260M and 250M cards respectively, the Studio 17 does fall behind in gaming performance with its lower performing ATI Mobility Radeon 4650

Although it costs a reasonable $1,164, the Dell Studio 17 has the power of a much more expensive notebook: a blazing quad-core Intel Core i7 processor that’s perfect for multitaskers and multimedia fiends, a full gigabyte of dedicated graphics memory, a fast, 7,200-rpm hard drive, and a nine-cell battery that outlasts other desktop replacements. Sure, you’ll get a more refined design and even stronger performance as you move up to more tricked-out systems, but the Studio 17 delivers a lot of value.

Dell's Studio 17 packs a big screen for a big peformance - pity on the big price

Our review model Dell 17 came with an eyewateringly green lid - it comes in a range of colours, and we were apparently sent the ‘puréed frog' model. Joking aside, the Studio is a good-looking system. Make no mistake, the Studio 17 is an excellent laptop, but Dell's exquisite design is again undermined by price.

Dell has managed to walk a fine line between price and performance with this machine. You can upgrade but at this price you don’t get extras like Blu-ray, just a standard DVD rewriter, but for a family orientated notebook you won’t find any compromises. It manages to pack in the latest Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 3GB of RAM and a whopping 320GB hard drive and still be affordable. There is even a dedicated gaming card, the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650, so you’ll be able to play games with ease. We really like this machine – it’s powerful, portable and for the configuration isn’t about to cost the earth.

If you make a minor increase to your budget and spend it on an XPS M1730 or Asus' M51Va, you'll get either a more powerful gaming machine with oodles of power or an extremely competent, high-definition desktop replacement.

Dell has taken full advantage of the Studio 17’s larger footprint by packing it with ports and connectors; it comes with five USB 2.0 ports, HDMI, FireWire, VGA, infrared, ExpressCard, and an eight-in-one memory card reader on-board, as well as an external USB RJ45 modem jack for those still clinging to dial-up. Otherwise, the 802.11n Wi-Fi and Gigabit Ethernet covers standard network and Internet connectivity, and you can add built-in mobile broadband as an optional extra. To top it all off, Dell also throws in a two-year next business day parts and labour warranty.

Dell is not known as a premier product designer, but it does a decent job with the design of its ultraportable and mainstream laptops. Its 17-inch laptops, like the Inspiron 1720, are unflattering bulky 10-pound machines whose buyers are mainly hard-core users and gamers. The Studio 17 gets major style points over its predecessors, but it lacks a few key features it needs to keep up with the competition.

The Studio 17 is by no means as attractive or desirable as an XPS laptop (excluding the gaming XPSs, they're pig-ugly), but it is slightly more appealing than an Inspiron. With that in mind, it achieves its objective: to be cheaper than an XPS without sacrificing too much in the way of looks. Laptops such as the Asus M70 offer more in the way of storage and connectivity, but the Studio 17 just about holds its own.

All things said and done, the Dell Studio 17 is the most impressive 17-inch consumer notebook we've seen so far this year. The build quality, range of customizable options, expandability, style, and price make this an excellent choice if you're in the market for a 17-inch notebook. Still, we would have liked to see more graphics card options than just the integrated Intel X3100 and dedicated ATI Radeon HD 3650. While issues like lack of VGA cable screw posts, dedicated docking station connector, or lack of a simple RAM expansion cover might prevent some buyers from purchasing this notebook, there's a lot to like about this notebook. The Studio 17 has virtually every cool feature you'd want in a 17-inch notebook ... with the exception of a built-in TV tuner. Bottom line, you'll be hard pressed to find a better 17-inch notebook in the same price range at the time of this writing.

Sometimes you want more performance than what a typical big-screen machine offers, and on that front the Dell Studio 17 delivers. You get a fast dual-core processor, discrete graphics, a humongous hard drive, and a beautiful high-res display. And we really like what Dell has done with its Dock interface and webcam software. However, the look of the system isn’t for everyone, and we’d like to see less-finicky volume controls.

ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650: La HD 3650 è una scheda di classe media (nel 2008) è la possiamo rapportare alla 8600M GT di invidia. È prodotta con un processo a 55nm e grazie al motore video Avivo, la scheda grafica può supportare il processore in molte operazioni video compresa la decodifica di video HD.

Ridurre la distanza delle Schede Grafiche per gli utenti che vogliono utilizzare il videogiochi. I nuovi giochi dovrebbero funzionare su queste schede, ma con riduzione dei dettagli e risoluzione mediocre.

Intel Core 2 Duo: Questo è il successore del Core Duo e del Core Solo con una pipeline più lunga ed il 5-20% di velocità in più senza avere maggiore consumo di energia. Come aggiunta al design del Core Duo esiste un quarto decoder, una unità amplificata SSE ed una unità logica aritmetica (ALU) addizionale. Il Core 2 Duo per portatili è identico al processore per desktop Core 2 Duo ma il processore per portatili lavora con un voltaggio inferiore (0.95 a 1188 Volt) ed un Frontside bus clock inferiore (1066 vs 667 MHz). Le prestazioni di portatili con clock equivalenti sono inferiori del 20-25% rispetto ai PCs Desktop a causa del Frontside bus clock inferiore e agli hard disks più lenti.

T8300: La Intel Core 2 Duo T8300 era al tempo del suo lancio una veloce CPU dual-core per portatili con 3 MB di level 2 cache.

I portatili DTR non sono facili da trasportare, richiedono molta più energia ma in compenso i testi possono essere letti facilmente e le risoluzioni elevate non sono problematiche.
