For that price, you get a premium home entertainment laptop that’s very well built with extensive features, has very good hardware and offers decent overall performance. Reasons to buy the Studio 15 over the Inspiron 15R is the choice of screen lid, extensive custom upgrade options, and superior onboard audio and performance.

The Studio 15 we received comes to a total of Rs. 48,700 with delivery. This machine isn't ergonomically the best out there. It's got souped up specs (except for the graphics chip) inside, enclosed in a what can be called in today's day and age a 'bulky' body. The main incentive to buy a Studio 15 is the option to upgrade to a Full HD screen and a Blu-ray drive. Otherwise for Rs. 50,000 you get the HP Pavilion DV6-3057tx, which comes with a higher-power  ATI Radeon 5650 chip. It has a Core i3 processor (although clocked at a similar 2.4 GHz speed, but no Turbo boost). But on the good side, it comes with that chiclet keyboard we like. Then there's also the Asus N61J, which has a potent NVIDIA GT325M graphics chip, and also pulls extra tricks like auto-graphics switching (NVIDIA Optimus) to save battery life, and USB 3.0 support. If you want something cheaper, there's always the Acer Aspire 5740G with the same Radeon 5650 graphics chip for a whole Rs. 10,000 less. The Studio 15 is a decent laptop overall, but there's nothing that stands out for us to go out and hoot about it. Especially after the Inspiron line drawing so close to the Studio, there's not much different between the two. The Studio series is in need of a refresh. If you're just looking for a typical big screened laptop to do your office work,  the Inspiron 15R should do just fine.

Dell's Studio 15 can be characterised in two ways. Without the 1,440 x 900 it's a very good, but not quite outstanding, 15.4 inch notebook that has a strong but not dazzling design - not at least till you opt for the Mike Ming lid designs - and standard feature sets and pricing that are competitive but not outrageously so. With the 1,440 x 900 WLED display, however, you have a different proposition entirely. It's a feature that few can offer and given you can have it and not sacrifice too much in terms of specification or price over competing models, it helps elevate the Studio 15 to an award.

At the end of the day the Studio 15 is a solid offering in the 15-inch consumer notebook category. The build quality, range of customizable options, expandability, style, and price make this an excellent choice if you're in the market for a 15-inch notebook. Still, we would have liked to see more graphics card options than just the integrated Intel X3100 and dedicated ATI Radeon HD 3450. Issues like lack of VGA cable screw posts, dedicated docking station connector, or lack of a simple RAM expansion cover are minor, and many experienced users may find the all-in-one access panel on the bottom of the notebook to be extremely helpful. The pre-configured model we tested suffered from weak integrated graphics that ruined an otherwise enjoyable experience, but configurations with dedicated graphics are available from Dell.com.

Parsing the intended markets for Dell's ever-shifting in-house brand names requires some tea-leaf reading. It's been easier lately, with the company stripping down its consumer brands to just the Inspiron and XPS lines. Now the company is adding a new line between the budget Inspiron and the high-end XPS. The new Studio line, as personified by the 15.4-inch Studio 15, has the same tapered shape, slot-loading optical drive and rounded hinge as the Dell XPS M1530, but a similarly configured Studio system costs roughly £350 less than a similarly outfitted XPS. Dell's first release from its new Studio line, the Studio 15, sits between the Inspiron and XPS lines and offers a good mix of features for the price, but we'd be tempted to save up a few extra pounds for a thinner, lighter XPS.

Quite frankly, we were surprised to find a Dell Studio laptop on the shelves at Staples. We would have guessed that as Dell's upscale, entertainment-focused laptop line, the Studio would have ceded shelf space to Dell's mainstream Inspiron line. Both laptop lines are present at the office-supply store, however, and representing the Studio line is the Studio 1555 (4285MBU) ($749.98), a 15.6-inch desktop replacement. With its long-lasting battery, useful feature set, and functional design, the Dell Studio 1555 is still the 15.6-inch laptop to beat.

On first look i found that the build quality was better than expected, I had read a fiew reviews by owners that thebase was flimsy and so was the keyboard. I have found this to be quite solid and i can see no flex at all. The keyboard is very responsive and a pleasure to use, although i find that some of the keys give a slight squeeking noise when pressed. I intend to get a backlit keyboard sometime soon so that should fix the squeeking problem. A great all rounder laptop that should full-fill the needs of most, Not to over priced and has some good choices when configuring to buy.

Despite this, it's hard not to come away a little disheartened from our first encounter with the Studio 1555, however. Dell's Studio range of notebooks failed to bowl us over when it strode into view in the tail end of last year and, if anything, the Studio 1555 takes a step backwards from there. The good looks, solid performance and keen pricing may be enough to tempt some prospective buyers away from its budget rivals but, ultimately, the iffy build quality and mediocre keyboard put paid to its class-leading aspirations.

Regular readers will recognise the Dell Studio 1555. We reviewed a version of it in July and went away very impressed, so impressed in fact that we gave it a 9/10 and a Recommended Award. However, as has been the case for a little while now, it's possible to buy Dell laptops from retailers like PC World, not just Dell itself. Today we're looking at it again in its retail incarnation, which is on sale for £599. If you buy the Dell Studio 1555 from your local hardware emporium you won't be disappointed, it's fundamentally a very good laptop with especially good battery life. However, if you're really keen on it, it's worth checking with Dell first to see if you can't get a little more bang for your buck.

Dell's Studio 15 greatly impressed us last year by combining power, usability and features at a truly affordable price, and even won our award for best laptop of 2009. When we first caught sight of Intel’s mobile Core i7 we were unashamedly excited. Finally, the prospect of serious quad-core power lay within tantalising reach of the mobile market, and without the heinously bad battery life of the previous Core 2 Quad generation. On the whole, the Studio 1558 is a good all-rounder that offers an impressive screen and a processor with plenty of poke, for a sensible price. Its design, despite the range of colours and patterns on offer, is not quite as flash as some of the latest 15-inch models from Toshiba and Samsung, but it makes up for this lack of flair with remarkably good build quality.

The $849 Dell Studio 15 isn’t perfect, but it’s still an excellent, affordable multimedia machine that should be on your short list. It performs better than slightly more expensive systems, although its gaming clout isn’t quite up to snuff. However, the design, particularly the keyboard, is one of the most ergonomically sound we’ve tested in awhile, and the long battery life means you can use it in various rooms of the house without having to worry about plugging it back in right away. We would still direct gamers toward the $899 ASUS N61Jv-A2, but everyone else—shoppers on a budget and anyone who craves long battery life and a comfortable keyboard—should consider the Studio 15.

With a street price of $900, the Dell Studio 1558 offers a very compelling laptop package. Performance and battery life are good but the design still retains the same Studio 15 chassis that has been used for some time. Many of the best features Dell offers such as the WLED displays are optional which can raise the price up. Still, it is a good basic system for those wanting a solid performing system with some upgraded but not gaming caliber graphics.

Con sede principale in Texas, Dell ha più di 82.700 impiegati in tutto il mondo (2009). Nel 2006, Dell ha acquisito il produttore di computer hardware Alienware. Nella maggioranza dei paesi in cui opera, i portatili sono venduti direttamente ai consumatori dalla Dell ed ogni portatile è assemblato sulla base delle richieste dei singoli consumatori e delle opzioni disponibili. I dati del 2007 sulla suddivisione del mercato dei personal computers (ricerca di mercato IDC): HP 18.9 %, Dell 16.4 %, Acer 9.9 %, Lenovo 7.5 %, Apple 5.7 %.

Ridurre la distanza delle Schede Grafiche per gli utenti che vogliono utilizzare il videogiochi. I nuovi giochi dovrebbero funzionare su queste schede, ma con riduzione dei dettagli e risoluzione mediocre.

ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3450: Succeditrice della HD 2400 prodotta con una tecnologia 55nm (perciò con un velocità di clock più veloce). Supporta DirectX 10.1, Avivo video HD. Può essere adatta per giocatori occasionali (giochi che richiedono molte risorse posso essere fruiti solo con settaggi base)

ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4570: La ATI Mobilty Radeon HD 4570 della AMD è una scheda grafica DirectX 10.1 di fascia medio bassa per portatili. Tecnicamente è una Mobility Radeon 4530/4330 con clock superiore.
AMD Specifica la presenza di un bus di memoria lento da 64 Bit, ma alcune varianti della GPU-Z mostrano bus da 128 Bit (potrebbe essere un errore).
Le prestazioni di gioco della ATI Mobility Radeon HD4570 dovrebbero essere molto simili alla desktop HD 4550 che ha analoghe specifiche.

Intel Core 2 Duo: Questo è il successore del Core Duo e del Core Solo con una pipeline più lunga ed il 5-20% di velocità in più senza avere maggiore consumo di energia. Come aggiunta al design del Core Duo esiste un quarto decoder, una unità amplificata SSE ed una unità logica aritmetica (ALU) addizionale. Il Core 2 Duo per portatili è identico al processore per desktop Core 2 Duo ma il processore per portatili lavora con un voltaggio inferiore (0.95 a 1188 Volt) ed un Frontside bus clock inferiore (1066 vs 667 MHz). Le prestazioni di portatili con clock equivalenti sono inferiori del 20-25% rispetto ai PCs Desktop a causa del Frontside bus clock inferiore e agli hard disks più lenti.

T8300: La Intel Core 2 Duo T8300 era al tempo del suo lancio una veloce CPU dual-core per portatili con 3 MB di level 2 cache.

P8600: CPU dual core veloce ma non costosa. Sufficiente per la maggior parte dei giochi e delle applicazioni multimedia ed adatta anche ai portatili più piccoli grazie ai 25W di TDP.

Intel Core i7:

720QM: Il Core i7-720QM è il Core i7 Quad più lento del 2009 ed ha un clock tra 1.6 e 2.8 GHz (grazie al Turbo Mode). Di conseguenza, il processore combina i vantaggi delle veloci CPUs single core e delle lente CPUs quad-core. Rispetto alle più veloci CPUs Core i7, la 720QM ha solo 6MB di L3 Cache.

Intel Core i5:

520M: Il Core i5-520M ha solo 3 MB di L3 Cache (rispetto alla I7-640M) ed un clock tra 2.4-2.93 GHz (Turbo Mode). Grazie all'Hyperthreading, possono essere processati 4 threads contemporaneamente. Nel pacchetto è inclusa anche una scheda grafica (GMA HD 3150) ed un controller memoria DDR3.

15.4: La variante di display da 15 pollici rientra tra lo standard ed è utilizzata da più della metà di tutti i portatili. I display da 15.4 pollici in 16:10 sono lo standard per i portatili. Attualmente, sempre più appaiono i displays 16:9 da 15.6 pollici. Lo svantaggio è che la lettura di testi è estenuante per gli occhi. Risoluzioni elevate difficilmente potranno essere utilizzate.

15.6: La variante di display da 15 pollici rientra tra lo standard ed è utilizzata da più della metà di tutti i portatili. I display da 15.4 pollici in 16:10 sono lo standard per i portatili. Attualmente, sempre più appaiono i displays 16:9 da 15.6 pollici. Lo svantaggio è che la lettura di testi è estenuante per gli occhi. Risoluzioni elevate difficilmente potranno essere utilizzate.

Questo portatile è più leggero rispetto alla media di tutti i notebooks. Ma è troppo pesante per essere un sub-notebooks. 
 13 pollici sono la norma per questa categoria di peso. 

2.84 kg:

Questo peso è medio per i notebooks. Di conseguenza la numerosità di portatili con schermo da 15-16 pollici è condizionata proprio dal peso.
