Dell's Inspiron 14 is their middle sized budget laptop system with a 14-inch screen to help keep its size down. While the pricing can be very attractive, Dell made a few interesting choices when it comes to the system to keep the prices low. Of course, Dell offers a wide range of upgrades on custom orders but these will quickly add to the price and can push the systems cost well past many similarly equipped laptops. The system is functional but best serves those that need specific features.

While many laptop buyers will gravitate toward specialty machines--such as a tiny Netbook for travel or a massive desktop replacement for gaming or video editing--there are still plenty of people who need a traditional midsize laptop. We call these 14-, 15-, and 16-inch systems members of the "mainstream" category, and they are the workhorse backbones of the laptop biz. Dell's middle-of-the-road Inspiron 14 offers a decent low-cost mainstream Core 2 Duo package, but we would have liked better battery life and more graphics options.

The Dell Inspiron 14 is a no frills budget portable laptop. I can’t find a lot wrong with it for the price. The major complaints would be the fact there are no newer digital output ports such as HDMI, no status indicator lights other than power, the look is pretty plain and finally if you configure a Core 2 Duo processor the price quickly jumps. Positives include that the weight and size are good and you get an optical drive and media card reader that are missing from the more expensive studio 14z. Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 4500MHD: Scheda grafica intregrata basata sul chipset GM45 (Montevina). Più performante rispetto alla vecchia GMA X3100 grazie ha due shader in più ed ad un clock più elevato. Rimane, comunque, non consigliata per i giocatori più incalliti. Il processore video integrato è capace di codificare video HD (AVC/VC-2/MPEG2). Ad esempio permette la riproduzione di video HD compatibile con i requisiti del logo Blu-Ray, con il supporto nativo per unità Blu-Ray.

La maggior parte dei giochi attuali può essere giocata in modo fluido. Ma preparatevi ad una riduzione delle presentazioni grafiche considerando le impostazioni di dettaglio basse e la risoluzione limitata. Tuttavia, queste schede forniscono ancora abbastanza potenza per le applicazioni da ufficio e la proiezioni di video (ma non per i video HD).

Intel Pentium Dual Core: Un ritorno del nome Pentium, sebbene sia un core Yonah. In fatti, è un processore dual Core con un ottimo rapporto prestazioni consumi.

T4200: CPU dual core di fascia bassa con 1 MB di level 2 cache senza tecnologia virtualization. Rispetto alla gamma Core 2 Duo, alcuni sistemi di risparmio energetico sono stati disattivati.
