Although the technology world's obsession with 3D has waxed and waned over the past few decades, it's now firmly back in fashion. The price tag also seems a little high. If you are keen to try 3D and aren't necessarily bothered about gaming, the Acer Aspire 5738DZG-434G50Mn might be a better, and cheaper, option.

Ultimately the ASUS G51J succeeds in bringing 3D to the gaming masses, but in our humble opinion the content – as is often the case – has yet to catch up with the technology. Until it does the £1699 price tag seems a little steep, considering there is currently more power available for much less.

Both are great laptops, and while we didn't give either the coveted Gold award they are closer than we've come in quite some time. For those that are wondering, anything earning a Bronze Editors' Choice is (at least in my mind) a 90% score; Silver means 93%, and Gold means 95% or higher. Basically, Gold awards are reserved for unequivocal recommendations, and we do have a few minor complaints with both of these laptops, mostly oriented around the LCDs.

EN→ITThe ASUS G51J has a few solid improvements over the older G51VX, most notably the shift from the Intel Q9000 to the Intel Core i7-720QM processor. This change shaved roughly 5 seconds off its wPrime score alone. 3DMark06 performance went up as well, but we didn't see that much of a boost in actual gameplay. PCMark05 is also down, but it is hard to say if it was related to hardware or operating system differences. Overall users who are interested in purchasing this notebook should look at one item; the price. With specifications improving or staying equal, ASUS dropped the price $200, from $1,699 to $1,499. The only items lost were the previously included Eee Stick controllers, which were probably not used many users, if any.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260M: La NVidia GeForce GTX 260M è la scheda grafica di fascia alta della serie 200M e si basa sul core G92b. Di conseguenza, il chip è un 9800M GTX con valore di clock leggermente superiori 550/1375/950 contro 500/1250/800. E' realizzata in tecnologia 55nm. Pertanto non è simile alla Desktop GTX 260 ma in qualche modo alla 9800 GT.
Come tutte le schede con capacità DirectX 10, la GeForce GTX 280M gestisce le immagini 3D utilizzando la "Unified Shaders". Non esistono più shaders pixel- e vertex dedicati ma 112 processori chiamati stream che fanno il lavoro grafico (fatto in precedenza dagli shaders pixel and vertex shaders). Inoltre, le unità shader hanno clock superiori rispetto al chip (1375 MHz).
Queste schede grafiche sono paragonabili alle entusiasmanti schede grafiche desktop, come la 9800M GT. Le schede hanno un core simile alle relative schede desktop, ma hanno un clock inferiore e spesso hanno processori con meno ombre. I giochi moderni come Age of Conan, Race Driver Grid, Call of Duty 4, Mass Effect, o Gothic 3 dovrebbero scorrere in modo fluido con dettagli elevati (Crysis dovrebbe funzionare con dettagli medio alti).

Intel Core i7:
720QM: Il Core i7-720QM è il Core i7 Quad più lento del 2009 ed ha un clock tra 1.6 e 2.8 GHz (grazie al Turbo Mode). Di conseguenza, il processore combina i vantaggi delle veloci CPUs single core e delle lente CPUs quad-core. Rispetto alle più veloci CPUs Core i7, la 720QM ha solo 6MB di L3 Cache.

15.6": La variante di display da 15 pollici rientra tra lo standard ed è utilizzata da più della metà di tutti i portatili. I display da 15.4 pollici in 16:10 sono lo standard per i portatili. Attualmente, sempre più appaiono i displays 16:9 da 15.6 pollici. Lo svantaggio è che la lettura di testi è estenuante per gli occhi. Risoluzioni elevate difficilmente potranno essere utilizzate.

3.3 kg: Questo peso è medio per i notebooks. Di conseguenza la numerosità di portatili con schermo da 15-16 pollici è condizionata proprio dal peso.
