The ASUS G51J is a pricey 3D notebook that's aimed at gamers. While the ASUS G51J won't appeal to many users, and it may even miss the mark when it comes to gamers who want to be early adopters of 3D technology — it could definitely use more graphics grunt under the hood in order to compete with other dedicated gaming machines on the market, especially considering its asking price.

As far as 3D goes, the Asus G51J 3D is certainly a more capable machine than Acer’s 5738DZG. Not only is it more powerful, but with the active glasses it can also deliver a better 3D experience. The high price tag is the obvious stumbling block. Prices will no doubt fall if and when 3D finally takes off, but at the moment anyone looking to wave goodbye to 2D will have to pay a rather hefty premium.

The ASUS G51J 3D is an exciting notebook for early adopters who want to take their gameplay to the next level. While we would’ve liked a higher-resolution screen—and higher frame rates—this rig is more than capable of playing the latest titles. At $1,699, it’s $200 more expensive than the non-3D version, but that premium is reasonable considering the newness of the technology. Acer’s $779 Aspire 5738DG does a better job of bringing 2D movies into the third dimension, but Nvidia’s 3D technology is more effective, and provides better viewing angles with the included glasses. If you’re a gamer, the G51J 3D is definitely worth a look.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260M: La NVidia GeForce GTX 260M è la scheda grafica di fascia alta della serie 200M e si basa sul core G92b. Di conseguenza, il chip è un 9800M GTX con valore di clock leggermente superiori 550/1375/950 contro 500/1250/800. E' realizzata in tecnologia 55nm. Pertanto non è simile alla Desktop GTX 260 ma in qualche modo alla 9800 GT.
Come tutte le schede con capacità DirectX 10, la GeForce GTX 280M gestisce le immagini 3D utilizzando la "Unified Shaders". Non esistono più shaders pixel- e vertex dedicati ma 112 processori chiamati stream che fanno il lavoro grafico (fatto in precedenza dagli shaders pixel and vertex shaders). Inoltre, le unità shader hanno clock superiori rispetto al chip (1375 MHz). 

Queste schede grafiche sono paragonabili alle entusiasmanti schede grafiche desktop, come la 9800M GT. Le schede hanno un core simile alle relative schede desktop, ma hanno un clock inferiore e spesso hanno processori con meno ombre. I giochi moderni come Age of Conan, Race Driver Grid, Call of Duty 4, Mass Effect, o Gothic 3 dovrebbero scorrere in modo fluido con dettagli elevati (Crysis dovrebbe funzionare con dettagli medio alti).

Intel Core i7:

720QM: Il Core i7-720QM è il Core i7 Quad più lento del 2009 ed ha un clock tra 1.6 e 2.8 GHz (grazie al Turbo Mode). Di conseguenza, il processore combina i vantaggi delle veloci CPUs single core e delle lente CPUs quad-core. Rispetto alle più veloci CPUs Core i7, la 720QM ha solo 6MB di L3 Cache.

15.6": La variante di display da 15 pollici rientra tra lo standard ed è utilizzata da più della metà di tutti i portatili. I display da 15.4 pollici in 16:10 sono lo standard per i portatili. Attualmente, sempre più appaiono i displays 16:9 da 15.6 pollici. Lo svantaggio è che la lettura di testi è estenuante per gli occhi. Risoluzioni elevate difficilmente potranno essere utilizzate.

3.4 kg: Questo portatile è più pesante della media, rispetto agli altri portatili. Di conseguenza soprattutto i desktop replacements vanno bene per questa categoria di peso.
 16-17 pollici sono la norma per questa categoria di peso.
