Ultrabooks, Intel's name for thin and light laptops, tend to be sleek and eye-catching. While the Acer Aspire S3 ultrabook is certainly very slender, its dull grey appearance is far less attractive in the flesh than it is in photos, although some may prefer the less flashy look. The Aspire S3 isn't a bad ultrabook, but its keyboard and battery life could be better and the lack of USB3 ports could be limiting in future.

We’ve now looked at three 13.3” ultrabooks, plus the MacBook Air 11 and 13, and the ASUS UX21E. I’ve also had some hands on time at a local store with a Samsung Series 9, so that covers much of the ultrabook market right now. Unfortunately, I haven’t had a chance to see any of the Lenovo IdeaPad U300/U400 offerings or any other ultrabooks in person (yet), so I’ll have to leave them out of consideration.

As the first Ultrabook we’ve reviewed, Acer’s 13.3in Aspire S3 has a lot to live up to, and on quite a few points it manages it. We’re impressed with its performance, build quality and screen, while it also scores points in the looks and usability categories. Only connectivity, audio and battery life cause any serious concern, while missing features like keyboard backlighting detract from the premium feel. However, if you’re happy with the slim girl next door rather than a super model, the S3’s low price means it’s definitely a contender.

The best summary I can think of for the Acer Aspire S3 Ultrabook is that it’s a splendid product with some annoying details. On one hand, it’s a good all-rounder in an amazingly slim, lightweight package. On the other hand, the keyboard will take some getting used to, the trackpad is awkward and the fan noise could drive your office colleagues nuts, however, Acer tells me that the review S3 was from a pre-production batch and what's on sale now should be cured of these ills. Yet for carrying around and flipping open here and there whenever needed, the Acer Aspire S3 is just the job. Oh, and if you want to shave £200 off the price, there's always Acer's Intel 1.6GHz Core i5-2467M model to consider.

Should you buy an S3 Ultrabook? Well, yes. Unless you don't. The MacBook Air remains the better built machine, has the sharper screen and has high-speed Thunderbolt for express file transfer. Spec it up to the Acer’s numbers, though, and it also costs £450 more than the S3. While that could be seen as money well spent (much of it pays for the all-solid-state memory and Apple laptops have a healthier resale value than their peers), Acer’s svelte Ultrabook is still worth considering. After all, with a similar spec, the MacBook Air is a tad slower than the S3. And that's not all. The S3’s considerable processing grunt and supercharged wake times are impressive specs to find in a laptop under two centimetres thin and weighing just 1.3kg. It runs Windows natively and has a full HDMI port. It can sleep for nearly two months and be ready to pounce into Windows in under six seconds. Yes, it costs a lot, but the Acer Aspire S3, like a slightly flawed diamond, is still worth waving your wallet towards. Just don't expect perfection.

It’s difficult to try and label the Acer Aspire S3 Ultrabook as anything but a reaction to Apple’s Macbook Air models without it feeling like an exercise in self-deception. But sensibly Acer hasn’t gone head-to-head on all fronts. In ditching the expensive unibody construction, the manufacturer has been able to use its usual strategy of undercutting the competition. We’re yet to hear the exact specs and prices that will be available to us in the UK, but £799 is much easier to swallow than £1099 – even if the Aspire S3 doesn’t quite have the desirability of Apple’s babies. But then who does?

Overall, the Asipre S3 is a good machine, however, it does not feel like a new category of a laptop. Yes, it it quite slim and wakes up and connects to your Wi-Fi fast along with offering a decent battery life and decent performance- but that is certainly not something unheard of. I think Intel should have made some more things mandatory for the Ultrabook platform- such as an SSD and a higher resolution screen.

But Acer has the distinction of being the first company to actually put a production model of its S3 Ultrabook in our hands, and what a beauty it is. Weighing only 1.37kg and measuring a mere 17mm at its thickest point, Acer has chosen to go with a magnesium alloy-based chassis. It isn’t a unibody design, but that doesn’t detract from the slightly curved lines of the underside of the chassis.

Our review unit retails for £869, making it well over £250 cheaper than the Toshiba Portégé Z830, which is still the best choice for business users.

With the price on this particular setup being a bit more than the standard build, you’ll need to think about what you’re planning on using the machine for – if it’s home use for the internet and simple games exclusively, you’ll want the more basic Core i5 build. If you’re attempting to run some more impressive games and maybe a bit of the ol’ video processing, this i7 build is the one you want. Toss it in your backpack and be surprised at how little it ads to your daily weight, break it out at the coffee shop and impress the denizens of the generally Apple-heavy world of public browsing. Acer has come through with a winner here, folks, make no mistake about it.

Sottile, veloce e adatto ai giochi. Nel 2011, Acer ha introdotto l'Aspire S3-951, il primo Ultrabook in assoluto. Dopo tre anni, possiamo deliziarci di poter incontrare il suo successore, l'Aspire S3-392G. Una potente CPU Haswell, una GPU adatta ai videogiochi e molta memoria sono messi insieme in un piccolo e compatto computer. La nostra recensione rivelerà di cosa è capace questa macchina da 13.3 pollici.

Acer: Nel 1976, l'azienda è stata fondata a Taiwan con il nome Multitech e nel 1987 è stata ribattezzata Acer o Acer Group. La gamma di prodotti comprende, ad esempio, laptop, tablet, smartphone, desktop, monitor, TV e periferiche per computer. Dal 2007, il gruppo si è fuso con Gateway Inc. e Packard Bell, che commercializzano anche le proprie linee di prodotti per laptop.
I computer Acer sono progettati per una varietà di scopi, inclusi ultrabook per uso mobile, laptop da gioco per giocatori, opzioni convenienti per le attività quotidiane e laptop convertibili 2 in 1 per la versatilità. Intel HD Graphics (Sandy Bridge): Scheda grafica integrata nei processori Sandy Bridge Pentium e Celeron. Simile alla desktop HD Graphics 2000 e non connessa con il vecchio processore grafico Arrandale che ha lo stesso nome.
Intel HD Graphics 3000: 3 imminenti (Q1 2011) schede grafiche integrate nel processore Intel Sandy Bridge (Core ix-2xxx). La 3000 / 200 è la versione più veloce internamente chiamata GT2 con 12 Execution Units (EUs).
La maggior parte dei giochi attuali può essere giocata in modo fluido. Ma preparatevi ad una riduzione delle presentazioni grafiche considerando le impostazioni di dettaglio basse e la risoluzione limitata. Tuttavia, queste schede forniscono ancora abbastanza potenza per le applicazioni da ufficio e la proiezioni di video (ma non per i video HD).
Intel HD Graphics 4000: Processore grafico high end tra i modelli Ivy Bridge. Offre una differente velocità clock nei diversi modelli di CPU (da ULV a desktop quad core) e di conseguenza con prestazioni variabili.
Intel HD Graphics 4400:
GPU ULV integrata (GT2) con 20 EUs che si trova su alcuni processori Haswell.
Ridurre la distanza delle Schede Grafiche per gli utenti che vogliono utilizzare il videogiochi. I nuovi giochi dovrebbero funzionare su queste schede, ma con riduzione dei dettagli e risoluzione mediocre.
NVIDIA GeForce GT 735M: Scheda grafica di fascia media della serie GeForce GT 700M. Si basa sull'architettura Kepler (GK208) ed è realizzata da TSMC in 28nm.

2637M: Processore ULV a risparmio energetico con clock tra 1.7-2.8 GHz grazie al Turbo Boost. Offre una HD 3000 integrata con clock tra 350 / 1200 MHz e controller di memoria DDR3-1333.
3517U: Veloce CPU ULV Ivy-Bridge-based del secondo quadrimestre 2012. Offre un core clock di 1.9 - 3.0 GHz ed una GPU HD 4000 (350 - 1150 MHz). Il TDP è di 17 W.
Intel Core i5:
2467M: Processore ULV a risparmio energetico con clock tra 1.6-2.3 GHz grazie al Turbo Boost. Offre una HD 3000 integrata con clock tra 350 / 1150 MHz ed un controller di memoria DDR3-1333.
3317U: CPU ULV Ivy-Bridge-based del secondo quadrimestre 2012. Offre un core clock di 1.7 - 2.6 GHz ed una HD 4000 GPU (350 - 1050 MHz). Il TDP è di 17 W.
4200U: Processore dual-core Haswell-based ULV con clock da 1.6 GHz con supporto Turbo Boost fino a 2.6 GHz. Offre una GPU integrata HD Graphics 4400 ed un controller di memoria dual-channel DDR3.
Intel Core i3:
2367M: Processore ULV a risparmio energetico con clock da 1.4 GHz senza Turbo boost. Offre una 3000 con clock da 350 / 1000 MHz integrata ed un controller di memoria DDR3-1333.
